Newry and Armagh MLA, Justin McNulty has praised all the agencies for their swift responses to storm Eleanor earlier this week.

Mr McNulty and party representatives had contacted NIE, Transport NI / Roads Service and the PSNI reporting incidents in local communities.

The MLA commented "At one point there were thousands of properties across Newry and Armagh without electricity, but many were restored within a few hours by Engineers from NIE."

"We also witnessed a lot of trees down right across the constituency and these were swiftly reported to the PSNI and Transport NI / Roads Service. Trees came down and blocked main roads and it was a danger to be out and about.  Whilst there has been damage to properties no one has been seriously hurt or injured and for this we are truly thankful.

"I want to place on record my sincere thanks, and those of local communities to those who responded to the calls on Tuesday night, especially those engineers in NIE who worried through hazardous conditions to restore power to homes. Their work is greatly appreciated by everyone.

"In the coming days whilst the winds are forecast to ease, colder weather is predicted and I would urge caution on our roads.  As always, I would also plea with people to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours at this time of year."
