A young boy has died after being struck by a vehicle in Dobsons Way in Bessbrook earlier today. 

The child was taken to hospital for treatment but unfortunately died from his injuries.

The PSNI are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact officers in Newry by calling 101 quoting reference number 399 of 11/08/17.

Roisin Mulgrew, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down Council, has expressed her condolences with the family and friends of the boy.

Speaking following the incident, Cllr Mulgrew expressed the sense of shock and sorrow shared by the wider community “This tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and the loss will be felt in every home in the area, but not least with the grieving family.

“My thoughts are with his family and friends over the coming weeks and months as they come to terms with this tragedy, as will those of every citizen in the area.

MLA Justin McNulty also passed on his condolences "This is a complete tragedy, one that will be felt by the entire community.

"Our thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences are with the deceased, his family and community at this very difficult time."
