Kilkeel 2’s 1-1 Newry 2’s

Tenth league game of the year for Newry Olympic Hockey Club 2xl in Junior League travelled to local rivals Kilkeel. Result Kilkeel 1 – Newry 1

Newry began the game in blistering style which saw them boss the opening proceedings. Newry opened the scoring with a goal inside the first 10 minutes with their first penalty corner. The goal was scored by Andrew Marks taking his goal tally to 4 for the season so far. The goal came as a result of a mishit penalty corner from Simon McCafferty but Mark’s was on hand to deflect the shot home. Both sides continued to go all out for the next goal but neither could find the break through before the half time whistle.

The second half saw Kilkeel totally dominate the game as they bombarded the Newry defence with attack after attack.  Newry were their own worst enemies as they continuously gave the ball away to an already determined Kilkeel side.  A string of great saves by Sam Henry kept the home side at bay until Kilkeel finally equalised inside the last 5 minutes of the game.  The result mean that Newry now sit on 15 points and remain in Fourth place in the Junior 1 table with opponents on the day Kilkeel sitting just a further 2 points adrift. Newry will now place Lisnagarvey 2xl at home on Saturday in the final game before the Christmas break.

PSNI  Ladies 0-1 Newry Ladies

On Friday 6th December, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI travelled away to Stormont to play the PSNI 1st XI Ladies in the Senior 4 Ulster Hockey league. Newry won the toss and drove the ball forward straight into the PSNI circle from the start. However the strong PSNI defence fought back and fired the ball straight back into the Newry side and were the first team to be awarded a corner. The PSNI failed to capitalise and Newry played their way back into the game forcing a number of corners of their own and were unlucky not to go ahead when Laverne Inn’s low shot was taken off the line by a PSNI defender.  Newry scored through Lynne Ervine when another Newry short corner broke down but Ervine was on hand to drive the ball home. Lynne Ervine again controlled the play from centre of the pitch feeding the ball left and right to Naomi Dickson and Anna Bingham who again played hard against the PSNI midfield. The score at half time was one nil to Newry.

Both sides tried to build on their solid first half performance but neither could find a break through.  Newry defended well to keep PSNI at bay and keep their slender lead intact.  The game ended 1-0 to Newry as they continued their good recent form.

Team: Carol Waddell (goals) Laverne Inns (Captain), Laura Simpson (Vice-Captain), Alison Gamble, Chrissie McAuley, Lynne Ervine, Kathryn Baird, Anna Bingham, Gayle Davidson, Nicola Shields, Debbie Barry, Laura Girvan, Sara Adams and Naomi Dickson

Newry will play South Antrim at home next Saturday 12th December to finish off the year 2014. Newry Ladies are pleased to announce that they have secured sponsorship for their main playing top with BMW David Prentice for 2015.

Newry 1’s 1-0 Harlequin’s 1’s

Newry hosted Harlequin’s on Saturday on the back of their first win of the season against Mossley.  The home side knew they had to take something from the game in order to leave themselves in a good position before the winter break, however this was not going to be an easy game as Newry had a very depleted squad due to a number of injuries.

The game started evenly with both team’s working hard to cut down space making it hard for either side to work the ball out from the back.  As the match wore on, Newry grew into it and were now causing ‘Quin’s a lot of problems at the back with the front three working well to force the Quin’s defence into several errors.  Robert Irwin had two great opportunities to put Newry in the lead only to be denied by the keeper on both occasions.  The first chance came when the ball was worked in from the left hand side as Irwin picked the ball up in the centre of the circle he swivelled and fired in a shot which the keeper managed to keep out, however the rebound landed back with Irwin but his second shot again was saved and went out for a long corner.  Soon after Irwin had his second chance but again the keeper was able to deny the centre forward and the opportunity went begging.

Newry continued to be on top and after forcing a corner they took the lead with John Taylor finishing well with a high drag flick.  Newry came in one up at half time but could easily have been more.

The home side started very poorly in the second half and were being dominated in the early exchanges by Harlequins, but for all their possession they could not force a clear cut opening.  Newry were looking dangerous on the break and should have been further in the lead after a great run down the centre of the pitch by John Taylor found him one on one with the keeper, having down all the hard work Taylor could only fire wide of the target.  David Andrews had another great chance for Newry but his low drive narrowly missed the target with the keeper beaten all ends up.  Just when it looked like Newry were going to see out the game Harlequins forced a penalty corner as the final whistle blew.  With all the Quin’s team up for the short corner Newry had to see out three penalty corners in succession before they could final seal the win.

Newry Olympic Men’s 1st XI would like to thank their sponsors Smet Building Products, Nummy Transport and Canal court hotel who attended the game, for their support for this first season back in the Premier league.

Team: F. McGivern, N. McKnight, D. England, N. Davenport, J. Greer, J. Taylor, C. Henning, A. Gilmer, C. McKnight, R. Irwin, K. McCombe, D. Andrews, K. McWilliams,  A. Foster

 Cookstown 4’s 4-1 Newry 3’s

Newry travelled to Cookstown for this 4PM match which is never an easy slot to play in this away fixture.  Cookstown from the off were the better team, making the most of their home advantage.  It didn’t take them long before they took the lead after a number of saves from Eddie Graham.  It was soon two as Cookstown put Newry to the sword, trying to kill the game off before halftime.   The home side continued to dominate in the second half and were three up before too long.  Newry managed to sneak a consolation goal through Scott Blakely but it was too little too late.  Cookstown still had time to get their forth and put the game to bed.

Team: E. Graham, A. Auterson, K. Best, A. McKeown, R. Cartmill, D. Liggett, A. Baird, W. Adams, J. Niblock, A. Collum, S. Blakley, T. Benson
