Newry 1’s 1-1 North Down 1’s

Newry hosted North Down on Tuesday evening in a game both sides were hoping to win to secure league survival.  Newry started the brighter of the two sides and could have been one up early on when good work from the forwards to break down play lead to Keith McWilliams collecting the ball in the circle but he was denied by the advancing keeper with his initial shot and with the rebound.

Midway through the half the home side finally found the break through with Kyle McCombe and McWilliams linking up on the right hand side and breaking into the circle for McCombe to slot home on his return to the first eleven.

In the second half North Down pushed forward pinning Newry back for long periods but were unable to find a break through or a clear cut chance.  Newry were able to force a number of short corners but could not find the second goal.  North Down however were able to capitalise on their first real chance through a short corner as they got back on level terms.  Newry managed to hold on and see out the match for a vital point.

Newry 2’s 2-3 Kilkeel 3’s

After a free week last week Newry entertained local rival’s Kilkeel on Friday night. Newry should have been in front early in the first half as they dominated both possession and territory with chances falling to Graham, McCafferty and Andrews. It was Andrews who gave Newry a deserved lead with a well-placed penalty corner. This goal should have settled Newry but kilkeel snatched an equaliser which came after a scramble when the first shot from a short corner was saved by the Newry keeper Collum but was eventually tucked away by a Kilkeel player!

Half time Newry 1 Kilkeel 1

Newry started the second half with purpose and were rewarded when they were awarded a penalty stroke which frontman Simon Mccafferty tucked away with ease his 3rd goal in 2 games! Kilkeel responded with 2 quick fire goals and Newry had some big chances to equalise but found the Kilkeel goalkeeper in good form.

This was only Newry's second defeat from Christmas which is a record they can be extremely proud of!

Kilkeel 1’s 4-1 Newry 1’s

Newry travelled to Kilkeel on Saturday with a depleted side and knew they would have their work cut out for them with the home-side still in with a chance of winning the league. The Mourne men controlled the first half for long periods as they applied pressure but could not break down a resolute defence with keeper Josh Porter not having to make a save of note in the first half.

The second half started with a bang as Newry won their first sort corner of the game.  McWilliams was able to find Greer at the back post who should have had a simple tap in but managed to miss the opportunity.  Within 20 seconds Kilkeel were in the lead as they went straight up the other end to score.

Newry tried to get back on level terms but found Kilkeel’s pacey frontline hard to handle and they were soon two down.  As Newry pushed forward trying to get back into the game they left gaps in defence and Kilkeel scored two more quick fire goals to make it four.  Newry did manage to get a consolation goal with only a minute left with Kris Fletcher firing in a first time shot.

Newry host Raphoe on Tuesday evening in their last home game of the season in a must win game.
