Senior Men

Our senior men made the short journey to Forkhill on Sunday for their second league game and with a strong wind blowing the length of the field it was always going to be a game of two halves, and so it proved. The Shane’s played with the wind at their backs in the opening period but it took them seven minutes to register the opening point with Kristian Magill slotting over a close range free and the same player followed this up shortly after with another well taken free. Forkhill replied with a pointed free of their own before a brilliant save from their keeper prevented an almost certain goal from the boot of David McCabe. An injury to Paul O’Rourke delayed the game by almost ten minutes but on the restart Connaire Mackin pointed to put the Shane’s two the good with Forkhill responding with their second point of the game. Points from Paul O’Rourke and Kristian Magill edged the Shane’s further ahead but Forkhill fired over their third point to keep them within touching distance. The sides swapped points ahead of the half-time break with Kristian Magill on target for the away side to leave the Shane’s leading by two at the interval, 0 – 6 to 0-4. However, the Camlough side should have been further in front as they shot a total of eleven wides during the opening thirty minutes.

Straight from the second-half throw-in Forkhill reduced the deficit to just one with a well taken score before a surging run from Eamon McCabe ended with the ball making its way to Ryan Quinn who made no mistake from close range, coolly slotting the ball to the Forkhill net. The sides then traded two points apiece with Greg McCabe and Kristian Magill on target for the Shane’s to keep them four in front. However, Forkhill then got a real grip on the contest and fired over six points in a row to see them lead by two heading going into the closing minutes before a Kristian Magill point left just the minimum between the sides with the game now injury time. From the resulting kick-out the Shane’s won possession and worked the ball to Connaire Mackin who fired over to the tie the game, to leave the final score: Shane O’Neill’s 1 – 10 Forkhill 0 – 13.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies eventually opened their league campaign on Saturday night in Grange, after a couple of postponed games due to the weather. Playing without injured county senior trio, Aimee and Blaithin Mackin and Louise Kenny, Shanes still fielded a fairly young but experienced side.

Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half the Shane’s always looked dangerous going forward and managed to hit the net on five occasions. However, a succession of soft frees kept Grange within striking distance and left Shanes leading by six at half-time.

The second half was a very even affair with the Shane’s defending deep as the wind picked up and using clever counter attacks to keep in front. With time almost up and with the Shane’s holding a two-point lead, a Grange shot took a huge deflection into the net to put them one ahead before one final attack by the Shane’s saw an effort at equalizing fall agonisingly short.

In their first game of the season Shanes ladies will definitely feel it's a game that should have won but the positives of a good battling performance can be taken forward to the next game at home against Armagh Harps this Monday night, 16th April, at 7.00pm. Special mention must go to young goalkeeper Aoife Brady who made her senior debut and had a great game. Final score: Shane O’Neill’s 8 - 5 Grange 5 - 15.

The Shane’s team and scorers on the night: Aoife Brady, Orlagh McKenna, Emma Kenny, Caroline McMenamin, Hannah McMenamin, Cliodhna Sloan, Hayley Mackin, Orlaith McArdle, Kirsty Murphy, Ciara Jones (1 – 1), Moya Feehan (1 – 0), Jessica Watters, Aoibheann Jones (3 – 3), Sorcha McDonnell (3 – 1), Megan Hughes. Subs Paris Boswell, Sinead McDonnell, Tara Reel, Breenagh Maguire.

Minor Boys

Our minor boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins had their first league last Monday against Naomh Eoin but they were beaten by the better on the night.

Minor Girls

Training for our minor girls continues this Monday and Thursday evening at 7.00pm.

U16 Girls

Our U16 girls play Dromintee on Thursday evening and all players are asked to meet at the club at 6.00pm. The girls will be hoping to bounce back from a narrow one-point defeat to Killeavy last week. They put in a great performance only to concede a goal late into injury time to lose out by the narrowest of margins.

U14 Boys

Our U14 boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins recorded a very impressive win over Brian Boru’s last Tuesday evening and they return to action this Tuesday evening with an away game against Carrickcruppen.

U10s (P5 & P6 Boys and Girls)

Despite the wet weather conditions both teams put on a great display but it was the young Shane’s who emerged the winners by a couple of scores. Next Sunday sees them attend their first tournament in Silverbridge and training for our U10s, boys and girls, takes place from 6.30pm – 8.00pm every Friday evening at the field.
