Newry AC were busy this week taking part in events all around the country and covering the disciplines of Cross Country, Track and Road.

Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships

Wednesday afternoon saw Chloe O’Hare and Meadow McCauley compete for their schools at the Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships at Mallusk.

In the Intermediates, Meadow finished in 29th position and in the Seniors, Chloe finished in 31st.

Armagh International Road Race

Thursday saw the much anticipated and prestigious annual international road race event in Armagh. Ten Newry AC athletes competed in various age groups.

This was a superb evening of which the Newry AC supporters and athletes witnessed 113 men breaking 15 minutes in the 5k and the Male winner well under 14 minutes in a new course record. 49 women were also under 10 minutes in the 3k. An inspiring night of racing for all.

First to compete was young schoolgirl, Grace Hamilton. Grace ran in the 2005/2006 age group race of which took off hard and fast. Grace ran well finishing with a 29th placing.

In a fast and furious women’s 3k Race amongst top international athletes the Newry AC ladies had great results. Esther Dickson finished 75th in 10:33; Meadow McCauley finished 104th and 4th Junior B in 11:44; Sarah Jane Beattie finished 110th in 12:05; Anna Fegan finished 120th in 12:39 (9th Junior B) and Chloe O’Hare finished 124th (6th Junior A) in 13:22.

The men competed in an intense 3k race of speed amongst a large field of talented runners.

Gary Crummy fought hard to maintain his position and was rewarded a 10th place (5th MO) in an impressive 9:09. Rory Mulvaney had a great run finishing in 61st place in 10:06. Mark McGivern came over the line in 98th in 10:59 and Cathal McGreevy followed Mark closely through to take 100th (5th M50) in 11:04.

National Indoor Senior Championships - Abbotstown, Dublin

Gary Crummy travelled to The National Indoor Arena in Dublin on Saturday to compete in the Senior 1,500m event.

This is a prestigious annual event with top Irish athletes in attendance of which can be daunting to newcomers to the sport but it did not phase young Gary.

Gary took on the 1,500m with confidence and with an extremely fast pace set by the lead runners he followed through with a new PB. Gary did not qualify for the final but annihilated his PB by 5 seconds down to 4:15:96.

Mourne Mountain Rescue - Donard Wood Trail Race

Aidan Murray took part in the MMR Donard Wood Trail Race, Newcastle on Saturday morning. The race co-ordinated by NIMRA was to raise funds for the Mourne Mountain Rescue - a service much appreciated by all locals and those who frequent the Mournes. This was a 5 mile race starting in Donard Park, passing up through the Granite Trail, past Thomas’s Quarry and on up to the mast at Drinnahilly, followed by a fast downhill return to Donard Park. Aidan, had a strong race and finished with a 6th position in a time of 34:27.

50th Ras na hEireann Cross Country

On Sunday, 3 Newry AC athletes took part in The 50th Larry McGuill Ras na hEireann XC in Oldbridge Co. Meath hosted by Dunleer A.C (Louth). The event attracted over 700 runners from all corners of the country along with overseas athletes and was held on the historic Battle of the Boyne Fields.

The ground underfoot was dry and the weather conditions were sunny but very windy.

Meadow McCauley raced in the U17s 3k event and took a great 8th place in a very competitive field in a time of 12:08. A great result for Meadow following her Ulster Schools Cross Country and Armagh Road Race events this week.

Sarah Jane Beattie and Joanne McCauley ran in the Senior 4K Race. Sarah Jane finished in 15th place with a time of 16:13 - again a great result following her participation in Armagh Road Race on Thursday night. Joanne finished in 41st place with a time of 18:15.

Mountain Training

On Saturday, a squad of Newry AC athletes took to a recce of the challenging Annalong Horseshoe route. This was a day for assessing their endurance and navigation skills.
