Senior Men

Our senior men put in a great performance to record a brilliant two-point over St Paul’s in Camlough on Sunday afternoon, 2 – 12 to 0 – 16.

St Paul’s led by two points after five minutes before Paddy Gregory got the Shane’s off the mark with a well taken point but St Paul’s continued their bright start and registered the next two scores to lead by three. Two pointed frees from Paul O’Rourke in as many minutes had the Shane’s back to within but a pointed 45 from St Paul’s put them two to the good with fifteen minutes on the clock. The sides then swapped points with Paul O’Rourke popping over a close range free for the home side to keep two between them before four points on the trot for the Shane’s in great five-minute spell put them in front for the first time in the game, the scores coming from Paul O’Rourke, Eamon McCabe, Ciaran Mackin and Ryan McCabe. A late first-half point from St Paul’s saw them go in at the break trailing by one, 0 – 8 to 0 – 7.

Just like the first period St Paul’s registered two early second-half points to nudge themselves back in front again. However, the Shane’s replied in great fashion when Eamon McCabe finished low to the net for the first goal of the game and Raymond Fitzpatrick pointed a great score almost immediately to give the home-side a three-point lead. A pointed free from St Paul’s kept the scoreboard ticking over for them before a brilliant flowing Shane’s move saw Kristian Magill put Matthew Girvan through on the goal and, having rounded the keeper, he coolly slotted the ball home. The Shane’s led by five at this stage but two quick-fire points kept St Paul’s right in the game and three in arrears. Paddy Gregory increased the Camlough sides lead to four with a calmly taken score only for it to be cancelled almost immediately with another pointed free from St Paul’s. With three minutes of normal time remaining Paul O’Rourke clipped over a free from a tight angle to give the Shane’s a four-point advantage but three points, all from frees, from the twenty-ninth to the thirty-fifth minute saw St Paul’s get back to within just one. The away side battled to get back on level terms but the Shane’s defence held firm and a late Paul O’Rourke free sealed the win for the home side on a score-line of 2 – 12 to 0 – 16.

Next up is a game against Whitecross on Friday night.

The club would like to thank Thomas McLoughlin and Bawnless Recruitment for their generous sponsorship of Sunday’s match ball.

Senior Ladies

On Tuesday night our senior ladies travelled to play Sarsfields in the league. In a tight and hard-fought contest, it was the Shane’s who finished strongly to come out on top on a score-line of 2 – 9 to 1 – 5. Star of the show was young Niamh Carragher who came off the bench to hit two brilliant goal and clinch the win. The girls are scheduled to return to action next Saturday at home to Crossmaglen.

U16 Girls

Our U16 girls are home to Carrickcruppen on Monday evening, 6th May at 6.45pm.

A Night for Sam

Next Saturday night, 11th May, the club is hosting a Night for Sam in the club-house. Sam Mathers, who is the wife of our club member and team mentor Bob and mother of our underage footballer Tristian, is a great friend of the club and is currently battling against illness. The night has been organised to raise such much needed funds for the Mathers Family at this difficult time and we are asking everyone to come along and support the event. Music on the night will be provided by the fabulous Anti Ballroom and begins at 9.00pm with tickets priced at £10.00, which are available from members of the Mathers Family and Shane O’Neill’s committee members.

Congratulations

Congratulations to all our underage members who made their Confirmation at the week-end.....we hope you all had a great day.

Happy Birthday

Everyone at the club would like to wish our long-time friend, club member and club volunteer Gareth “Root” McLoughlin a very happy 50th birthday.
