Senior Men

Our senior men are in the draw for the next round of the championship following a comprehensive eleven-point win over Keady in Ballymacnab on Saturday night, 4 – 8 to 0 – 9.

A Connaire Mackin free after two minutes got the ball rolling for the Shanes but three points in a ten-minute spell put Keady ahead. The Shanes went in front minutes later when a speculative effort from Paul O’Rourke deceived the Keady keeper and the ball crept over his head in to the net and the Camlough side led by one. Three further points from Greg McCabe, Ciaran Mackin and David McCabe saw the Shanes go into the half-time interval with a well-deserved four-point advantage.

An early second-half free saw Keady reduce the deficit to deficit to just three but two great points from Matthew Girvan and Paul O’Rourke kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shane’s. A fifth point Keady point left them just four in arrears but this was quickly cancelled out by an Eamon McCabe point before great work from Ciaran Mackin and Paul O’Rourke put Micheál Brady through on goal and the captain made no mistake from close range to net his side’s second goal of the contest. Less than five minutes later Paul O’Rourke raised another green flag when he got on the end of a Raymond Fitzpatrick knock down to stroke the ball to back of the net. The Shanes now led by eleven points with just over ten minutes left on the clock but Keady managed to reduce the deficit to eight with three frees in a row, all from frees. The sides then swapped points with Connaire Mackin firing over a ’45 and Keady landing another pointed free, and with the game deep into injury time Paddy Gregory wrapped up the Shanes win when he used all his experience to coolly slot the ball under the Keady keeper for his team’s fourth goal of the game to leave the final score 4 – 8 to 0 – 9 in favour of the Shanes.

Over the sixty minutes the Shanes were good value for their win, with their defensive unit in particular putting in a brilliant shift to restrict their opponents to just three points from play.

Training continues as normal this week in preparation next weekend’s scheduled game but at the time of going to press the date, time and opponents were still unknown.
