The inaugural Annual General Meeting of the new Newry, Mourne and Down District Council took place on Tuesday in Downshire Civic Centre.

Councillor Naomi Bailie was elected as the Chairperson of the new Super Council while Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick was elected as the Vice-Chairperson.

Speaking at the meeting the new Chairperson said, “It is a tremendous honour to be selected to take up the role of Chairperson in the new Council.  I undertake to work tirelessly to enhance the profile of Newry Mourne and Down to attract visitors and investment to this area and work to secure future communications, transport and roads infrastructure programmes to this region.  The title of our Councils Corporate Plan – ‘Proud of our past, Building our Future Together’ for me signifies precisely how I will deal with issues which may arise in the coming term.

Vice Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “I am delighted to be elected Vice Chairperson of our new Council.  This is a very exciting time for us all and I am looking forward to facing the challenges it will present.  I look forward to working with the citizens of our area and thank you all again for giving me this opportunity to serve you”.

Other business conducted at the AGM included the appointment of the Council’s standing committees. Details of these committees can be found on our new website www.newrymournedown.org
