Instonains 1sts 4  Newry 1sts 2

Newry travelled to league leaders Instonains on Saturday with the homeside yet to be beaten this season.  Newry started the better of the two sides going one up with only three minutes gone when David England converted a short corner.  It didn’t take Inst’ long to get into the stride however and were quickly back on level terms after a quick sweeping move.

Inst’ really started to pressurise the Newry defence who had to hold out wave after wave of attacks.  Newry seemed to be holding on but with five minutes to go until half time their defence was broken as Inst’ went in to the break in the lead.

The league leaders flew out of the trap in the second half and increased their lead with a well worked short corner with the second half only a minute old.  Newry began to play their way into the game more and they persistence paid off with Adam Foster scoring in his fourth game in a row after the ball took a look break off the post and landed infront of him for a tap in.

The game was now more scrappy and end to end which suited Newry as they knocked Inst’ out of their fast passing game.  However it was the home side who finished the game off with 8 minutes left as their got their fourth.   With around 1 minute left Greer was shown a straight red card for reacting to late tackle as Newry finished the game with 10 men.

Newry next play Kilkeel on Saturday at home.

Newry Thirds 2 Mossley 3

The Thirds were unlucky not to come away with at least a share of the spoils as they were defeated at home to Mossley on Friday night.

Newry made much the better start in freezing cold conditions and went in front inside the first quarter of an hour when Andrew Marks was on hand to finish and make it 1-0, which was no more than they deserved at that stage of the match.

However, the home side almost immediately seemed to take their foot off the pedal and that allowed the visitors to hit three goals without reply before the break and it was a scoreline that Newry would never quite be able to recover from.

Mossley’s first came when their right winger cut in and blasted a shot that managed to squeeze through keeper Josh Porter to equalise and they soon went 2-1 in front with a clever deflection from close range that gave Porter no chance. The third came just before the interval with a precision short corner that flew into the bottom left hand corner.

A much improved second half display from Newry saw them dominate possession and territory and they created a number of chances to get back into the game but were unable to get past the Mossley keeper who made at least two superb saves to maintain his side’s two-goal advantage.

Newry eventually found their way to goal with five minutes to go when Paul English was on hand to convert a rebound from a Mervyn McCaigue short corner that had been saved.

As Newry pushed for what would have been a deserved leveller in the dying moments, it looked as if they would nick and equaliser right at the death. English did well down the right to weave his way into the circle and with two colleagues lining up at the back post to convert an possible cut back, the visiting umpire blew the full-time whistle, much to consternation of the home side who seemed odds-on to score and earn the draw.

Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1ST XI 8 – Enniskillen Hockey Ladies 1ST XI 1

On Saturday 6th February 2016, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI played Enniskillen at home in the Senior 3 Ulster Hockey League.   Enniskillen were extremely quick to attack and were in the Newry circle, trying to score in the first five minutes. Enniskillen were awarded a couple of corners but due to the quick action of Newry goalie Gilly Roney and the strong defence of Abby Blakely, Laura Simpson and Avril Harpur the ball was quickly cleared out of the Newry circle. Newry began to settle and fought back hard, keeping possession for the next ten minutes.  Half way through the match Enniskillen found themselves under extreme pressure in the circle and conceded three consecutive goals to Newry’s Captain Laverne Inns along with left midfield Lynne Ervine and right midfield Lynn Anderson.  Enniskillen fought back but were unable to penetrate the Newry circle. At half-time the score was three nil to Newry.

During the second half Newry continued to keep the pressure on Enniskillen and were awarded a number of corners. The goals kept coming, one from Aimee Magowan who scored from right wing, one from Shannen Robinson who scored from the left wing and again another goal each to Lynn Anderson, Lynne Ervine and Laverne Inns. Enniskillen kept their heads up, fought back hard and from a break drove down into the Newry circle and successfully scored.  At the final whistle Newry forwards and mids had scored a total of eight goals.  Player of the match was Lynn Anderson in midfield. Next week Newry Ladies play Bangor at home in their kit sponsored by BMW David Prentice, Portadown.
