It's planned that the present stretch of the Carlingford Lough Greenway in Newry will be extended through to Carlingford by late 2020.

At present the greenway starts at the Albert Basin in Newry and reaches a 'dead end' at Victoria Lock. The additional stretch will run along the water's edge from Victoria Lock to Omeath and cross the Newry to Omeath road at the entrance to Carlingford Marina then travelling into the centre of Carlingford.

Doran Consulting gave a presentation this week to councillors at a Dundalk Municipal District meeting detailing the proposal and the timeline for completion of the greenway.

Estimations suggest that design should be complete by second quarter of 2019 with construction completed in fourth quarter of 2020 and a handover taking place in first quarter of 2021.

The project is being developed through a memorandum of understanding between three partners, Louth County Council, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and East Border Region and is primarily financed by the European Union's INTERREG VA Programme.

Completion of the greenway to Carlingford town involves three components: 1.7km from Victoria Lock to the border, 3.6km from the border to Omeath and 1.3km from Carlingford Marina to Carlingford.

The 6.6km of new cross border greenway will include way-finding signage and street furniture and  will form part of the northern section of a wider Greenway link from Belfast to Dublin referred to as the “Great Eastern Greenway”.

It's hoped that when completed the greenway will increase cross-border commuting by cycling or walking from 2.7% to 10% by 2023. Plans would also include using the facility for organised walks and cycles, charity events, cycling lessons, training events and festivals.

Speaking to Newry.ie Louth County Council, Cllr Antóin Watters explained that an information evening will be held on the 17th February in Carlingford and added "This will be an exciting development and will help to further promote Tourism in the area."
