Senior Men

Our senior men suffered their first league defeat on Friday evening, going down by one point at home to An Port Mor, 1 – 12 to 0 – 14.

An Port Mor scored the opening two points with Paul O’Rourke replying for the Shanes before the away side got their goal and put them four ahead. However, the Shanes scored four points in a row to get them back on level terms with Paul O’Rourke (0 – 2), Kristian Magill (0 – 1) and Mark McCabe (0 – 1) all on target. Another O’Rourke point put the Shanes ahead for the first time in the contest but An Port Mor levelled things soon after before points from Ryan McCabe and Connaire Mackin saw the Shanes lead by two. The sides then swapped frees, with Connaire Mackin getting the Shanes point, before a late free from An Port Mor saw them go into the break trailing by one.

The Shanes increased their advantage to two points early in the second-half with Paul O’Rourke again getting the Shanes score only for An Port to reply almost immediately. A Mark McCabe point kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shanes but the away side hit two points on the trot to leave sides all square once more. Another O’Rourke edged the Shanes ahead again but three points in a row from An Port Mor saw them lead the game by two and the Shanes were now playing catch-up. A Mark McCabe point reduced the deficit to just one but this was quickly cancelled out by the away side’s twelfth point of the game with Kristian Magill pointing a late free for the Shanes. The home side pushed hard for the equalising score but all to no avail as An Port Mor held on to claim the win by the narrowest of margins, 1 – 12 to 0 – 14. Next up is an away game against Tullysaran next Friday night.

Before Friday’s night game Nathan O’Shea, on behalf of Sperrin Fine Foods, presented the senior with a new set of jerseys, which now sees Nathan and his father, Garreth O’Shea (Gortrush Foods) sponsor our senior team and all our underage boys’ teams. The club would like to thank the O’Shea family for their continued support of the club and encourage all our members to support their businesses. The club would also like to thank O’Neill’s for the generous sponsorship of the match ball for Friday night’s game.

Senior Ladies

Saturday evening saw a severely depleted senior ladies team make the short trip to play Carrickcruppen. The home side ran out convincing winners but great credit must go to the younger Shanes girls who stepped up to the plate on Saturday and put in a very committed performance and fought right until the final whistle.
