A special breakfast meeting to promote the European Union’s Funded programmes of support available under the INTERREG IVA Programme is being hosted by Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade on Tuesday the 12th of February from 7.30am to 9am in the Canal Court Hotel. The event is Free of Charge for members and £15 to non members.
This event will cover three diverse projects, PLATO EBR, Smart ECOHub and STEM, that are currently recruiting SMEs onto their programmes of activity. PLATO EBR provides owner managers a business support forum where they can network and discuss business ideas with established large ‘parent’ companies in the region. These ‘parent’ companies are leaders in their industry sectors, and support the programme by sharing their skills and experience within the network.

SOAR (Southern Organisation for Action in Rural areas) has now awarded over £11.5 million to farming businesses, organisations and communities across Armagh, Craigavon and Newry & Mourne District Council areas.
SOAR supports the rural economy and improves the quality of life of those people that work and live there by increasing employment, attracting visitors to come visit the many and varied natural resources, developing the rural infrastructure for community services and increasing the income of rural communities.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy and Environment Minister Alex Attwood literally took the car to work today, inside Parliament Buildings!
In a joint departmental event to launch ‘eDrive’, Northern Ireland Electric Vehicle Conference and Test-Drive Event, to be held at Titanic Belfast from 6 to 8 March, the Ministers’ brought one of the latest electric cars into the Great Hall in Parliament Buildings.
As well as raising a few eyebrows from onlookers, the Ministers’ aim to raise awareness from the business community, private motorists and students about the benefits electric vehicles or ecars now offer.

Members of Prime Global UK and Ireland Managing Partners Group held their first meeting in Ireland this week.
Mayor of Newry and Mourne, Councillor John McArdle hosted a Civic Reception to welcome the group. Commenting at the Reception Mayor McArdle said "We are delighted that you have chosen Newry as the location for your first ever meeting held here in Ireland. In today’s globally competitive business environment strong leadership, international networking, and access to quality advice are key factors in achieving business growth and success."

Things may come and go but Malone's Ice Cream, Newry is one local business that has remained a constant in the Newry and Mourne area over the past 35 years.
Today though, with the rising costs of fuel, sweets and ice cream as well as insurance, council licenses and tighter control on hygiene, the once thriving ice cream van industry is a shadow of its former self.
Gerald Malone of Malone's ice cream has been there during the heyday of ice cream vending and insists he will continue on regardless of the pressures the industry faces. Gerald needs no introduction; you will have seen him at Cranfield Beach or in the streets around Newry.

Local Businesses and citizens turned out in force to the public meeting to support the ‘Buy Local’ campaign in The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre yesterday.
Speaking at the meeting Mayor John McArdle ‘the buy local initiative is designed to encourage citizens to spend their money locally and with the main focus being on educating people about the economic and cultural benefits of buying local and also creating and securing local jobs. Making Newry & Mourne area your destination for shopping and doing business is significant to the local economy’.
‘The public meeting is an opportunity for the people of Newry & Mourne to be collectively creating in their thinking and discuss a number of proposals and strategies that can be implemented.
Mayor John McArdle finished by asking everyone who lives work and visits the district to fully endorse the campaign.
This public meeting included a very informative presentation by Mr Eddy Curtis Director of Administration, highlighting the work that is being undertaken by Newry & Mourne District Council and Newry City Centre Management. Mr Eddy Curtis informed the audience that it included a marketing plan with a billboard campaign on the three main roads into the City centre, shop campaigns, media campaigns and many more’ Mr Curtis added that Pledge from the Shops to source suppliers locally was also essential to the campaign’. The Council would also be investigating the possibility of additional Markets where local produce could be sold in Newry, Crossmaglen and Kilkeel, and a ‘Buy Local’ website and Social Media page will also be launched in the forthcoming weeks.
Speaking at the public meeting was Mr Jack Murphy Chairman of Newry City Centre Management and Mr Cathal Austin President of Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade both fully endorsing this initiative and encouraged all in attendance to get behind the Buy Local Campaign for the future of local businesses and local jobs.
The meeting was opened to the floor for discussion, the delegates were very positive about the initiative and willing and determined to support with inclusion for all service sectors across the district.

Tesco has announced that it is recruiting over 200 new staff for its new Newry store which will open on the 6th of June.
The announcement was welcomed today by Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry as recruitment opened for the new store. The Minister described the jobs boost as good news for jobseekers in the Newry area.
The Minister said: "I welcome Tesco’s commitment to recruit over 200 new employees in Newry and to work with my Department's Employment Service to assist with the filling of these vacancies through the JobCentre network. This is a substantial number of jobs being created by an international company and is excellent news for the local economy.
“One of my Department’s primary aims is to prepare people for work - helping individuals to acquire jobs, including self-employment, helping employers to fill vacancies, and improving the linkages between employment programmes and skills development. An active and vigorous labour market is a key element in growing a dynamic, innovative economy and promoting social inclusion, whilst meeting individuals’ and employers’ aspirations.”
The recruitment process offers a full range of full and part-time positions, with all new employees undergoing Tesco’s bespoke training programme. Tesco internal training includes induction training, health & safety training, customer services training. Details of job opportunities are available on the Department's website JobCentre Online. Local Jobs & Benefits offices will also have details on the range of positions available and can offer useful help and advice on the Tesco online application process.
Tesco will also be offering unemployed young people in the Newry area the opportunity to avail of work experience with the company through DEL’s Youth Employment Scheme (YES). YES addresses the issue of youth unemployment by improving young people’s skills to enable them to get a job. Employability skills can be obtained by active participation in a work setting with an employer or a voluntary organisation. Young unemployed people are encouraged to participate in YES and avail of a wide range of work experience opportunities on offer at JobCentre Online.
