First Derivatives have taken home a prestigious Tech Company of the Year Award in the UK Tech Awards earlier this month and Chairman, Seamus Keating was on hand at the presentations to accept the award on behalf of the Newry company.
First Derivatives won their award in recognition of the company being “a fully accountable, well managed business that has already gained recognition from analysts and investors, but will also have outstanding long-term growth potential, with a sound strategy in place to ensure successful delivery of its commercial advantages and build shareholder value,”

Winners include companies and individuals in virtual reality, robotic automation and payments including James Dyson named tech CEO of the year.
More than 500 nominations were made across the UK tech awards categories this year, with the winners announced at an awards dinner in London. The awards, a joint venture between PwC and Ford Sinclair Ltd in association with Silicon Valley Bank, recognise the efforts of innovative public and private UK tech companies and individuals.
Jass Sarai, UK technology leader at PwC, commented “The appetite for deals activity we’re seeing in the market along with the number and quality of nominations received for the UK tech awards this year highlight the strength and breadth of our technology industry at the moment. This is testament in part to the support network and developing ecosystems now in place for early stage and growing businesses, but also to the ambitions and risks taken by our entrepreneurs.
“We need to ensure that we continue not only to take these risks, but also to share the lessons learnt with the next generation of innovators to maintain our leading position at a global level. In these uncertain times, the technology industry has an important role to play in promoting STEM skills to help bring through the leaders of tomorrow and continuing to work with government to secure continued access to global talent.”
Rosh Wijayarathna, director of corporate banking at Silicon Valley Bank, added “We are delighted to support the UK tech awards which is a real highlight of the season. 2017 has been another strong year for the UK innovation ecosystem and to be nominated in such a vibrant sector is a fantastic achievement. On behalf of Silicon Valley Bank, I would like to congratulate all of this year’s winners – each of your businesses are remarkable.
“Silicon Valley Bank is solely dedicated to serving the needs of innovation and life science businesses at every life stage. A public consultation to help decide a preferred option for the long campaigned for Southern Relief Road is taking place in Newry, tomorrow Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 November 2017 at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre from 10am to 9pm. All are welcome to attend.
The consultation is designed to help shape the design of the proposed Newry Southern Relief Road based on three shortlisted routes for the proposed scheme.
‘The Southern Relief Road around Newry is vital to the regions’ future economic success, especially in a post Brexit scenario’ according to a consortium of local stakeholders speaking ahead of a public consultation on the important infrastructure project. A group including Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade, Warrenpoint Harbour Authority, Seatruck, Regen Waste and Cronus Logistics have argued that the project should be given priority in future budgetary considerations by the Westminster government in the absence of a Local Assembly and Executive.

The scheme aims to provide a strategic transport link road between the key strategic corridor of the A1/N1 Belfast to Dublin route with the A2 and Northern Ireland’s second largest port at Warrenpoint Harbour. It is anticipated that the route will significantly improve journey times and journey time reliability for strategic traffic between the A2 Warrenpoint Road and the A1/N1, while also greatly improving road safety and traffic congestion within Newry City Centre. Previous economic business cases have demonstrated that improved accessibility to both Newry City and Warrenpoint Harbour will support and maintain sustainable economic growth and employment within the area.
Speaking at a pre-consultation briefing hosted in Newry, Mourne and Down District Council offices Peter Conway, Chief Executive, Warrenpoint Harbour Authority said, “There is an economic imperative that the Newry Southern Relief Road is taken forward, especially given the unique challenges presented by Brexit to our local economy. The Southern Relief Road will act as a strategically transport link between South Down and the Republic of Ireland and critically will ensure that Warrenpoint Harbour retains its position as the second busiest port in Northern Ireland, which in turn acts as a key economic driver for the whole region.”

“In view of Brexit, this major infrastructure project on the increasingly important north south corridor must be prioritised in any future infrastructure expenditure planning and budgetary processes now being undertaken by Westminster in the absence of a local Assembly and Executive.”
Mary Meehan, Chief Executive, Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade added;
“We welcome progress on this scheme to date and the recent securing of £1.2 million in European funding by the Department for Infrastructure through the ‘Connecting Europe Facility’ for the design stages of this important project. This funding support underscores the strategic importance of this project and will now allow the Stage 2 Assessment to be completed including consideration of the input from this important public consultation phase. The business case is clear that the Newry Southern Relief Road will support and maintain sustainable economic growth and employment within the area and at the same time ease traffic congestion and safety concerns in Newry itself. We hope that with the additional £400m funding now earmarked for Infrastructure investment here and the fact that the latest scoping exercise has demonstrated it can be delivered much more cost effectively than initially anticipated, the Southern Relief Road will be given the priority it deserves.”
The Options
Option 1 starts on the A2 Warrenpoint Road along the frontage of Greenbank Industrial Estate and crosses the Newry River and Canal just to the south of Drumalane Quarry and then heads in a westerly direction towards the A1.
Option 2 sees the corridor extend further south as far as Rough Island and follow along Fathom Line before heading in a northerly direction up Fathom Mountain to the A1.
Option 3 starts further downstream than Option 2 with a bridge crossing near Narrow Water before joining the Fathom Line route indicated in Option 2
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council recently hosted a second Economic Forum in the Canal Court Hotel on Wednesday 8th November 2017, with a focus on strategic economic initiatives being driven by the Council to create opportunities for local people and local communities to thrive.
At the Forum, Chief Executive, Liam Hannaway, presented the potential advantages of a Belfast City Regional Deal for the Council District alongside KPMG, the advisory team on the City Deal, highlighting the potential benefits across investment, infrastructure and skills.

It is expected that the UK Government will make an announcement affirming their commitment to a City Deal for the Belfast Region in the Autumn Budget on 22nd November. Other city regions which have benefited from a City Deal include Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Swansea.
The Economic Forum which was attended by over thirty businesses and representatives from across the Council area, focused on other key initiatives the Council has also been working on, for example, a new paper on Brexit and the Border Corridor.
The paper which was led by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council was developed across eleven local authorities comprising the Ireland/Northern Ireland Border Corridor. It outlines the risks, opportunities and issues to be considered as a result of Brexit, to ensure the region can reach its true economic potential.
Mr Hannaway recently presented the paper to the Irish Ambassador, the Northern Ireland Executive Office and Nina Obermaier from the Michel Barnier taskforce team at a meeting in Brussels accompanied by Chief Executives from other border Councils.
