The integrated agri-business, ABP, which has a site in Newry, has announced that it has developed an innovative renewable energy sourcing model which will enable the company to power all of its meat processing sites on the island of Ireland, exclusively from wind energy.
The company has entered into an arrangement with Natural Capital Partners to match its electricity consumption of its island of Ireland sites with wind power.
The arrangement includes the eight processing sites located in Newry, Lurgan, Bandon, Cahir, Waterford, Nenagh, Rathkeale and Clones. It also includes the company’s Pet Food production facility in Edgeworthstown and the Proteins sites in Waterford and Cahir.

This development will help ABP achieve its ambitious 2020 carbon reduction goals almost two years ahead of schedule with a cumulative CO2 emission reduction of 350,000 tonnes across ABP’s operations since 2008. The company will now introduce science-based targets to its carbon reduction model setting even more ambitious targets. The new science based reporting will be against a 2016 baseline.
Commenting on the announcement, Dean Holroyd, Group Technical and Sustainability Director, ABP, said: “We are delighted, ahead of schedule, to have achieve our target of becoming a lower carbon business. Not only are we sourcing 100% renewable energy to power our operations in Ireland, but we are significantly driving down our consumption, thereby helping our customers to source meat produced with a lower carbon footprint. We are now in a great position to adopt a science based target reduction model that will closely align ABP’s sustainability agenda with the Paris climate accord.”
Natural Capital Partners’ Chief Product Officer, Oliver Crouch, commented: “We are very pleased that ABP has taken the opportunity to source its power from wind energy, credibly meeting its renewable energy goals while supporting a technology that is driving the transition of the European grid.”
In January, ABP’s Renewables Division, Olleco, beat 40 other innovative organisations from across the globe to become one of just two finalists for a prestigious global environmental award at the World Economic Forum. The company was recognised for its outstanding contribution in helping develop circular economy solutions with respect to food waste in the food service and hospitality sectors.
Furthermore, ABP has previously achieved quadruple accreditation from the Carbon Trust in recognition of the progress it has made in reducing its environmental impact. The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s leading independent certification of an organisation’s impact on the environment, verifying action on energy use, Co2 emissions, water use and waste output. It recognises continuous excellence and year on year improvements in the area of environmental performance.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has hosted a ‘Meet the Buyer’ breakfast workshop with the construction industry to encourage more building contractors to tender for Council projects.
The free event allowed those interested in construction opportunities to meet directly with the Council’s Capital Projects Team and gain a detailed insight into the procurement process.

Those attending the workshop in King’s Inn, Castlewellan on Wednesday 20 March received a presentation on the Council’s obligations in terms of procurement policy as well as guidance on tendering for Council construction projects.

The topics covered included guidance on how submissions are assessed in relation to quality and cost, the judging of relevant experience, and common mistakes made in submissions. Details of upcoming construction opportunities with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council were also provided. An open floor discussion followed, with the construction industry also providing valuable feedback on the tendering process to the Council.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “The aim of ‘Meet the Buyer’ was to encourage better engagement with building contractors.
“The event is part of our strategy to deliver the Council’s Capital Programme over the coming years. It allows the officers in the Council to engage directly with the construction sector and, in particular, with small to medium sized enterprises.
“The high turnout and engagement at today's event was very encouraging and the discussions also particularly constructive. Hopefully these discussions will benefit all in attendance.
As a result we hope that with a greater understanding of the procurement process, more contractors will be encouraged to compete for upcoming projects.
“Ultimately, our aim is to continue to deliver high quality projects within the district and provide value for money to the ratepayer, and we cannot achieve this without such input from the private construction sector.”
