I came across these photos of Hill Street taken around 1981. It obviously was a busy shopping day with Dan the Street Singer Busking all the way up from Louisburgh in County Mayo. If you wanted to ring him his number was Louisburgh 44 - simple times!

Also appearing is Willy John's Take Away beside the Ambassador and Notion Tree???? Video Library which included such classic films as "The Coming", "Creep Show" and ... oh dear "Nude Wifes"!!! - it must have been one of the first ones of it's kind to make it to Newry!
Beside the Ambassador also was the YMCI presumably where the Magnet Centre is now.
One shop I have fond memories of that appears as well is McCorrys "E McCorry" which I think sold religious items and "fancy goods" I know in my youth I made my own decorative Candles and I tried to sell a few of them there. I think I may have sold one so no big career there!
Mc Caul and McVeigh Insurance Services and Once Upon a Time are also long gone.
It should be noted that Boyds Stores appears to have the same sign up still. Now that certainly was a good buy!
