News of a new tendering process launched by Newry and Mourne District Council for the disposal of black bin waste has been welcomed by the SDLP’s Connaire McGreevy.
Councillor McGreevy said that as Chair of Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWaMP2008 Ltd) that the failed bid by the Council last year to develop a long-term residential waste contract represented a huge disappointment.
“At the time the contract had to be terminated due to a number of very complex legal reasons.
“But that was of little comfort to the long suffering residents of the Mayobridge area. They have had to endure real hardship and inconvenience to their daily lives as a result of the waste disposal issue.
“Their frustration with the way in which the daily routine of their lives was being constantly disrupted was totally understandable.
“However at the time I was confident that we could ultimately find a better deal.
“At the time the procurement process had been scaled down to a single bidder.
“So obviously there was legitimate concern raised that we would be placed in a position where we would not be able to provide a deal that represented the best possible value for the ratepayers.
“Now that the Council is in a position to once again examine the widest possible range of waste disposal options the focus has to be on getting a solution that delivers value on all fronts.
“There is no doubt that the private sector has developed many state of the art technological solutions.
“By buying into that European wide data base of expertise in relation to the processing and disposal of waste our objective now must be to identify a provider that will help us meet crucial environmental targets.
“Just as important will be the lowering of all associated costs than the current method of simply using landfill to tackle a problem that by its very nature will continue to expand.”
Councillor McGreevy stressed that Newry and Mourne Council was still on course to close down the controversial Aughnagun landfill site.
“The new tender process has a pivotal role to play in achieving that goal.
“As a community and as a Council we can at last look forward to having the most advanced method of tackling an annual household waste problem of 26,000 tonnes implemented as soon as is possible,” Councillor McGreevy added.

Here at Newry.ie we are trying to do things a bit differently in the way you find out the happenings in your own small part of the world, that's Newry.
Anyway we are always more than happy to tell the rest of the world what a fantastic place we live in, what potential Newry has and if we need to scream about our residents successes from the rooftop we will certainly do that as much as is humanly possible (In a dignified way of course) Also it's great to keep everyone up to date with what events are taking place from week to week.
We should point out that we will NEVER EVER charge anyone or any locally owned business for publishing information about their successes and no story or article is put on the site on the condition of payment or kept of the site through lack of payment (Only exception are Business Profiles (See below) and they are obviously a promotional tool for the businesses concerned!)
We should note though that if companies, (especially large countrywide companies) benefit from their exposure on our Website, it's only fair that they should consider giving something back and advertise with us once in a while.
One week it's Oktoberfest we are highlighting, another week jobs at Autoline, another week the success of the Cycle Recycle enterprise. Next week it could be you - that's if you direct the information our way!
We are bursting with ideas for other options on the site but for us to spend even more time on the website i.e. 30 hours a day! we need to help it pay it's way.

Following their recent decision not to ground share with Warrenpoint Town FC for the 2013/2014 season, Newry City AFC Management Committee have released a statement clarifying their position.
The management committee of Newry City Athletic Football Club wishes to take this opportunity to respond to recent unfair and uninformed criticism over its decision not to share Newry Showgrounds with Warrenpoint Town in the forthcoming football season.
Newry City AFC has an excellent working relationship with Warrenpoint Town. In the season just finished the Newry management committee was happy to agree to a request from Warrenpoint to use the Showgrounds to play an outstanding Mid Ulster Cup match under lights. Within twenty four hours of Warrenpoint winning promotion, Newry sent a letter congratulating Warrenpoint on their promotion to the Danske Bank Premiership where we hope they do very well next season.
After a traumatic period, Newry City is in the process of rebuilding and we look forward to playing Warrenpoint Town in Premiership football one day.
Unfortunately, however, Newry are not currently in a position to ground share with Warrenpoint Town, or for that matter, with anyone else. The reasons are as follows:
• The playing surface at The Showgrounds would not stand up to the extra traffic in the Winter months that would occur as a result of groundsharing;
• In order to host Premiership football a licence is required. Newry Showgrounds does not have this licence because Newry City will now be playing intermediate football. The cost of acquiring such a licence runs to thousands of pounds;
• Newry Showgrounds is currently rated as an amateur ground. If it were to be rated for professional football this would increase Newry City’s rates bill by approximately 400%;
• The Showgrounds’ insurance premium would increase by approximately 100% if professional football were to be played there; and
• if groundsharing were to take place, there could also be potential difficulties around the scheduling of matches.
Students and tutors from the Southern Regional College School of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy were recently invited as Steiner’s VIP guests on their Caribbean Princess Ship when it came into port in Dublin Harbour.
Aoife Jennings, Regional Recruitment Manager for Steiner in Ireland and Scotland, was the guide for the day. SRC Staff and students from Newry campus were able to view the Hairdressing, Beauty and Spa facilities on board the Caribbean Princess Ship, which caters for over 3,500 passengers and over 1200 crew. Students commented on how valuable it was to be able to see first hand the high standards and professional image that passengers on board these vessels receive.
The visit continued with a tour across the ship’s 18 decks, covering areas such as the restaurants offering various styles of food, pool areas, casino, wedding chapel, crew cabins, crew area, night club and lounge areas.
The day was brought to a very enjoyable close when Steiner invited the staff and students from SRC to lunch in their buffet restaurant.
SRC were delighted to discover that one of their current students, Rebecca Carvill from Beauty Therapy Level 3, has been successful in gaining employment with Steiner. A further four SRC students have interviews pending. College staff would like to wish all applicants the best of luck in their new careers.

Police in E District are reminding householders to make use of the Quickcheck scheme when dealing with callers to their home.
The QuickCheck Freephone scheme is a 24-hour Freephone service which enables householders to challenge and independently verify the identity of anyone calling at their door.
The majority of utility companies operating in Northern Ireland have signed up to and actively endorse the QuickCheck scheme, which was first launched in 2008.
If you receive an unannounced caller to your home the following steps can help to keep your property secure:
Before you answer the door, make sure your back door is locked.
If you have a door chain remember to use it before you open the door.
Ask the caller for their identification and check it carefully.
Ask them to wait outside and close the door - genuine callers will not mind.
Ring Quick Check on freephone 0800 013 22 90. Your call will be answered personally and promptly by a trained operator. They will check with the company on your behalf, that the person at your door is genuine. If they are not or they think that there is something suspicious, they will contact the police immediately.
Do not let anyone into your home until you are satisfied as to who they are.
Quick Check is a free telephone service, which is available 24 hours a day all year round to residents throughout Northern Ireland.
Police recommend that you save the quickcheck number - 0800 013 22 90 - and the police non-emergency number - 0845 600 8000 - on your speed dial at home so that both are easily dialled if you need to make contact.
