A break in at Jonesborough Primary School at the weekend has been branded an attack on the community!
Slieve Gullion Cllr Mickey Larkin has appealed to anyone who has information relating to the incident to contact either the PSNI or himself.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday 12th March Cllr Larkin commented "Between the hours of 12 midnight and 2am on Monday morning three men forced entry to the primary school at Jonesborough. CCTV shows these criminals present in the area for a considerable length of time. Minimal damage was caused however a small sum of charity cash raised by the children was taken from the school. Apart from the damage and theft much upset has been caused to the pupils, staff and community. This attack on an educational facility is essentially an attack on the community of Jonesborough and cannot be tolerated.
Cllr Larkin concluded "I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed activity around the school during these hours or possibly a vehicle parked in the area of the Pastoral Centre to come forward to myself or the PSNI. Evidence has been gathered at the scene by the Police and I hope that this can lead to arrests and prosecution. Any other information relating to this anti community crime may help in the investigation and prevent other similar crimes. I along with the residents of Jonesborough will rally round their school to assure the staff and pupils of our full support following this crime."
PIPS Hope and Support and PIPS Upper Bann are the new Charity Partners of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust for 2018-2020. launched a new joint partnership with PIPS Upper Bann and PIPS Hope and Support as Charity Partners for 2018-2020.
Since 2013, the Trust’s Charity of the Year scheme has raised over £268,000 to support local charities and over the next two years, Trust staff will help raise awareness and vital funds for both PIPS charities.

Seamus McCabe, PIPS Hope and Support said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as a Charity Partner with the Southern Trust. All funds raised will help PIPS Hope and Support and PIPS Upper Bann provide crisis counselling to support vulnerable people who are at risk of suicide and people who self-harm in the Southern Trust area. There’s nothing better than joining forces with friends and colleagues to do something charitable and to help people who are going through a very difficult time. In 2016-17 we provided a total of 1933 counselling sessions to 419 clients and with help from the Southern Trust we can continue to provide this service.”
The charities were nominated by staff and chosen by a Selection Panel as the Trust’s new charity partners. Fundraising monies collected will be split equally between both PIPS charities and will be used to provide crisis counselling to support vulnerable people who are at risk of suicide and people who self-harm in the Southern Trust area.
Launching the new partnership Southern Trust Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development, Vivienne Toal said: “We are delighted to welcome PIPS Upper Bann and PIPS Hope and Support as the Trust’s Charity Partners. We looking forward to working in partnership with both charities to help promote the work they do and to help raise much needed funds for the provision of their services in the Southern Trust area.
“We have over 13,000 staff living and working across Armagh, Dungannon, Craigavon, Banbridge and Newry and Mourne. We know that there are many very worthy causes out there, all trying to raise much needed funds, so the Charity of the Year initiative was set up a few years ago to show how collectively, Trust staff could make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of others.
“We are appealing for Charity Champions who are needed to help make the partnership a great success. Champions can be members of Trust staff or volunteers with the charities and they will help to raise awareness of the charities and encourage others to get involved in fundraising activities.”
Last Friday saw the Barleyfield in Barcroft buzzing with laughter with the annual family fun day organised by Barcroft Community Association attracting hundreds of local families who enjoyed a wide range of activities including a variety of inflatables, go-karts, face painting, a barbeque and open-air disco.
Darren Thompson, Chairperson of Barcroft Community Association commented “The Family Fun Day marked the end of another successful community summer scheme that included day trips to Dublin Zoo and Exploris, arts & crafts, a green gym project, tennis, kite-making, a visit from the Teddy Bear Factory, and other activities. Hundreds of children, parents and grandparents have participated in events in recent weeks at the community centre and the adjoining grounds.

“Our committee members give up hundreds of hours of their own time throughout the year to manage the community centre and organise seasonal events. In between these activities our volunteers represent the interests of residents through the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, Supporting Communities NI Inter-Agency meetings, Community Safety initiatives along with regular engagements with the Council, Education Authority, Housing Executive, Southern Health and Social Services Trust, Southern Regional College, Conservation Volunteers NI, the Confederation of Community Groups, etc. Without this round the clock work the summer programme would not happen.
Mr Thompson concluded “We are very proud residents, this area means so much to our families, neighbours and friends. It was great to see everyone enjoying the Fun Day and it is encouraging that so many Polish families took part in the Barleyfield event. Like scores of other residents, I have been born and raised in Barcroft and I am proud of my roots. The Fun Day coupled with all our other activities highlights the very positive work of our dedicated community activists”.
