The issue of fly tipping at local beauty spots and at roadsides continues to be a major issue throughout the Newry area and surrounds with no obvious solution in sight. Unbelievably, in the majority of cases involving small items at tourist spots, a bin is usually close at hand but isn’t used.

This week alone Slieve Gullion Forest Park, Clermont Carn, Bernish Viewpoint, Omeath Road, Flagstaff and Ballymacdermott Court Grave have all been victims of the dumpers.

Items dumped include fridges, fireworks, washing machines, tv’s, carpets, underwear, tyres, cardboard boxes, Bottles, cans, condoms, filled black bin bags and childrens clothes and toys to name a few.

Condoms, underwear, bin bags, cardboard boxes, bottles and cans, fireworks, cigarette boxes and much more all compete for your attention at the popular Bernish viewpoint, one of Newry's most visited viewpoints.

Down at Newry Canal on the Omeath Road, rolls of carpet, more bin bags and a television sit waiting for someone else to take them away.

The incredible Ballymacdermott Court Grave may go back to 4000 BC but there is nothing prehistoric about the litter found there including childrens clothes and general gunge.

What drives people to dump personal items and household appliances in our beautiful countryside can only be guessed, although a lack of pride in your area and the distinct probability that you won't be caught must rank highly.

Although fixed fines of £50 for littering are issued by Newry, Mourne and Down Council culprits are notoriously difficult to catch.

If you discover dumping in the district you can report it online at which notifies the Newry, Mourne and Down street cleansing team.
