Saturday 12th January - FPSG Scottish National Indoor Open Championship, Emirates Arena, Glasgow

The highlight of the race week was the annual tour by the Newry AC contingent to attend the FPSG Scottish National Indoor Open Championships at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow.

The athletes and supporters travelled over to compete in a variety of events which included Long Jump, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m.

With 800 competitors in the mix, the Newry Athletes were delighted in recording some fantastic PBs and memorable performances.

All ages and levels of athletes are involved in this graded competition and it is an ideal opportunity for groundwork towards the encroaching Ulster and Irish Indoor and Outdoor Track Season. Some top athletes were in attendance at the event such as Jemma Reeves and Elidh Doyle.

Newry AC had a strong group of Junior and Senior athletes competing, some of which were debuting on the track.

Notable performances of the day for the Newry AC squad would go to senior squad members Gary Crummy and Rory Mulvaney and junior squad members Grace Hamilton and David Burns.

Gary Crummy debuted on the track in the 1,500m. Gary with no experience of track tactics took on a strong field and was not daunted by the formalities of the track officials. He lead in the top pack and broke free with another Scottish club runner to fly in second in his heat and also finish 2nd overall in his Band in a fantastic debut time of 4:20:90. With this performance and his spring training plan, a track season of success is on the cards for Gary.

Rory Mulvaney also a senior newbie to the track, took to the 1,500m with ease and powered through the running field with a fantastic sprint finish placing 4th overall in his band in a time of 4:37:79. A time now that Rory will use as a benchmark in the up and coming track season.

Grace Hamilton the youngest of the Junior Squad, took on a tough Band in the 300m. Grace was not affected by the track officialdom or by the fact that she was the youngest runner in her band and took to her race like a pro. With a perfect start she belted with confidence around the track, taking a 4th place in her heat, 15th overall in her Band and a great time of 51:90.

David Burns, the only male junior of the squad had a brilliant day recording 2 personal bests and was well chuffed with his performances. David took on the 800m early in the morning finishing 3rd in his heat and 3rd overall in his Band in a time of 2:32:77. He then after a few hours rest entered the track for the 1,500m and again with modest confidence worked his way around the track to finish 4th in his heat and 9th overall in his group, smashing his PB for a time of 5:34:39.

The competing club athletes would like to thank all the parents who travelled and supported the squad along with Aislinn Crossey, Mark Malone and Head Coach Kookie O’Hagan.
