Mossely 3’s 2-4 Newry 2’s

Newry travelled to Mossely for a 1pm start on Saturday with a depleted squad, they were slow to start with a reshuffled pack.  The home side took full advantage of this taking an early lead with only 5 minutes gone, when a miss hit reverse stick shot managed to beat Collum in nets and trickle over the line.

This seemed to wake Newry up who immediately got back on level terms when they won a short corner from the restart which was dispatched by David Andrews.

This breathed life into Newry and a few minutes later, after some good passing around and inside Mossleys circle Newry had a shot stopped on the line by a Mossely defenders body, and a penalty stroke was awarded. Captain Andrew Marks stepped up to take the stroke but was unable to convert as the keeper guessed the right side and palmed the ball away.

Mossely drew next blood as they were able to convert from a well worked short corner to take the lead for the second time in the game.

Again from the hit off Newry worked the ball well and moved it down the right with good skills and great one twos with Veteran Mervyn Mccaigue and Davy Andrews , who crashed a cross in which hit a defenders stick and dropped nicely to a well-placed Simon McCafferty who instinctively stroked the ball into the bottom corner, 2-2 at the break.

In the second half the game ebbed and flowed with boths sides going all out for the crucial third goal. With 15 minutes to go Mark McCullough picked the ball up inside the Newry 25, he pushed forward with the ball brushing aside any attempts to tackle him before unleashing a great shot which was saved denying what could have been goal of the season from this promising young player.

This piece of individual skill spurred Newry on and they managed to fire in two goals in the next five minutes to kill off the game.  The first of which came after some neat work between Phillip Moffett and Simon McCafferty before McCafferty’s shot was stopped illegally on the line, Newry were awarded their second penalty stroke of the afternoon.  David Andrews this time stepped up and slotted home to give Newry a 3-2 lead.

The fourth goal came about it much the same way as the third as Newry were awarded an unprecedented third penalty stroke of the match.  This time Simon McCafferty stepped up and fired home into the side netting to clinch the win for Newry.  Newry have now been beaten only once in 2017 and would hope to finish the season off strongly with two home games remaining.

Newry Ladies 2-3 Dromore Ladies

Newry hosted Dromore in their first game of the ladies plate competition.  Newry weathered an early storm from the visitors as they applied pressure on the home defence which held firm and seen off anything that came at them.  It was Newry’s turn to apply some pressure, and they were able to make this pressure count as Shannon Rosbinson scored their first goal which came after a scramble when the first shot from a short corner was saved by the keeper.

Newry were really on the up and three minutes later they made it two nil when Robinson again was in the right place as she flicked the ball high over the advancing keepers shoulder.

The home side pressed forward looking for the third and won a number of short corners but could not convert.  Just before the break Dromore won a short corner of their on which seen ex Newry player Nicola Clemence step inside the first runner and flick the ball high into the net.  2-1 at the break.

Newry dominated large spells of the second period, forcing short corner after short corner after good work from Kathryn Baird, Rachael Lockhart and Stephanie Smart, but were kept at bay by some good saves and last ditch tackles from Dromore.  With five minutes left Dromore won the ball back deep in their defence and fired a long hopefully ball forward which was picked up by the Dromore forward who was one on one with Newry keeper Collette Lambe, who was unfortunate not to keep the ball out as it trickled over the line.

Dromore one a short corner on the final whistle and pushed everyone forward in search of the winning goal.  After a goal mouth scrambled which seemed to go on for an eternity they managed to scramble the ball over the line to come away with a 3-2 win and progress into the next round of the Plate.  Newry can count themselves unlucky not to come away with a win after a very strong performance.

Team: C. Lambe, A. Harpur, L. Simpson, V. Lewis, R. Murdoch, R. Lockhart, G. Davidson, S. Rollins, T. McElroy, K. Baird, S. Smart, S. Robinson, L. Inns
