Mossely 1's 7 Newry 1's 2

Newry suffered a heavy defeat in their latest league match away to Mossely having travelled with a depleted squad. From the first whistle the it was obvious that the Homeside were there to make mends for their defeat to Newry earlier in the season as the looked dangerous on the attack from early on. Newry managed to hold them out for a while but 15 minutes in the Homeside got their first of the day, and within minutes it was two with their second coming through a short corner. Just before the break they made it three with the game effectively over as a contest.

In the second half Newry started to string a few passes together and forced a few chances mostly coming from short corners, however, Mossely were clinical infant of goal as they soon got their forth and fifth of the game. Newry did manage to score two goals through Keith McWilliams and Kris Fletcher but it was only a mini fight back as Mossely again went up the other end and scored two more before the final whistle.

Newry Olympic Ladies 1ST XI  2 – Parkview 1ST XI  1

On Saturday 16th February, Newry Olympic Hockey Ladies 1st XI faced Parkview at home in the Ulster Hockey Senior 3 league. Parkview won the toss and chose pass back with the sun behind them leaving Newry to play home second half. Parkview kept possession from the start and drove the ball up into the Newry side putting Newry goalie Collette under pressure but left back stopped the first chance of Parkview scoring by clearing the ball on the line.  Newry were extremely quick to retaliate and were able to penetrate the Parkview defence thanks to left back Lynne Ervine who walloped the ball through to right wing Steph Smart and weaving the ball through the Parkview defence found Rachel Greer, centre mid at the top of the circle.  Rachel picked up the ball and slipped the ball through to Laverne Inns, centre forward who flicked the ball over to Shannen Robinson on left wing and with a reverse slap scored the first for Newry. Newry settled into the game and were the first to be awarded a penalty corner twenty minutes into the game.  Kathryn Baird, Captain was quick to inject the ball to Laverne and Rachel who played a quick one two for Laverne to score a second for Newry. At half-time the score was two nil to Newry.

During the second half Parkview continued to keep the pressure on Newry and through great team effort in defence Caralyn Ferris, sweeper kept Parkview clear of the Newry circle switching the ball to right mid Becky Murdock and Suzy Rollins, centre forward to keep Parkview on their toes.  Taja McIlroy, came on to bring fresh legs to the team and took another corner for Newry however the Parkview keeper was determined not to let Newry score a third and had to dive to save the shot on goal.  Ten minutes later Parkview continued to fight back but centre back Gayle Davidson kept the ball out of the Newry circle and blocked the Parkview forwards at every angle. Parkview continued to play hard and five minutes before the final whistle scored their first but  by the final whistle the score was two one to Newry.  Player of the match was Shannen Robinson
