Senior Men

Our senior men suffered a narrow one-point defeat away to Mullaghbawn on Sunday afternoon, 1 – 15 to 2 – 11.

Mullaghbawn opened the scoring in the first minute with the first point of the match before Connaire Mackin cancelled it out with a decent effort. The Shane’s were playing with a strong wind at their backs and between the fifth and the twelve minute they fired over four unanswered points courtesy of Kristian Magill (F), Connaire Mackin (F), Ryan McCabe and Greg McCabe. A pointed free for Mullaghbawn reduced the deficit to three before David McCabe was upended in the square and Connaire Mackin stepped up to dispatch the resulting penalty to the net. A further pointed free for Mullaghbawn kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side before Micheál Brady got on the end of a flowing Shane’s move to fire the ball low to the net for his side’s second goal of the goal, and putting them eight to the good. The sides then swapped pointed frees with Kristian Magill on target for the Shane’s before Mullaghbawn got the fifth point to leave seven between them. With the first-half now in added time Kristian Magill and Raymie Fitzpatrick slotted over a point apiece to give the Shane’s a very healthy nine-point half-time advantage.

With the wind at their backs in the second period Mullaghbawn recorded a goal and a point in the opening ten minutes to reduce the deficit to just five points before Mark McCabe replied for the Shane’s with a well taken point. A further two pointed frees kept Mullaghbawn well in the game before their third point in a row saw them back to within three. A David McCabe point edged the Shane’s four ahead again but a further three points, one from a free left just the minimum between the sides, before they swapped points with Connaire Mackin on target from a placed ball to keep the Shane’s narrowly in front with the game in stoppage time. Another close-range free saw Mullaghbawn tie the game and with time almost they were yet again awarded another simple free which they tapped over to claim the win by one, 1 – 15 to 2 -11.
