Sinn Féin Vice President, Michelle O’Neill MLA, was in Newry this week to launch the party’s candidates for the upcoming local government election on May 2nd.

In both Newry and Slieve Gullion Sinn Féin are standing a new candidate to complement their existing team. Sitting Newry councillors Charlie Casey, Valerie Harte and Liz Kimmins will be joined by new candidate Sarah Jane McAllister.

Sinn Féin’s Slieve Gullion councillors, Terry Hearty, Mickey Larkin, Barra O’Muiri and Roisin Mulgrew will stand alongside new candidate Oonagh Magennis.

Speaking at the launch, Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill said, “It’s so encouraging to see such a vibrant team being launched here tonight. The strongest teams are those that have the best mix of youth, energy and experience – that is exactly what these Sinn Féin teams have!”

Speaking on the anniversary of Bobby Sands’s historic election as MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone, the Sinn Féin Vice President concluded, “Sinn Féin is standing in these elections on the basis of standing up for our communities, delivering rights, social justice and equality. We are also a national independence movement – we want Irish Unity. A referendum on Irish unity is coming and we all have our part to play.”
