Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin visited Newry and Mourne Museum at Bagenal’s Castle last week to help staff celebrate the Museum’s richly deserved four-star visitor attraction rating, awarded by Tourism Northern Ireland.

Speaking at the event  Councillor Murnin said, “I am delighted to help the museum celebrate its richly deserved four-star visitor attraction rating. This award is a credit to all the staff who work so hard to ensure our shared history is presented in a vibrant and considered manner and I am pleased to see them rewarded for all their efforts.”

The award highlighted the museum’s revamp which took place in 2018 which updated galleries, corridors and displays. The renovations now include displays of artefacts which had not been seen before, enriching the experience of visitors.

Since its opening, the museum has welcomed visitors from all over the world to enjoy its three permanent exhibitions displaying pre-historic artefacts, remains from the Cistercian Abbey, 18th, 19th and 20th century objects, as well as artefacts relating to the history of McCann’s Bakery. There are also two galleries housing temporary exhibitions that further highlight the rich heritage and culture of the region.

The museum has free tours every Sunday for those who are looking to learn more about the rich history of the area. For further information on Newry and Mourne Museum please contact 028 3031 3182.
