Funding from the National Lottery will mean that people affected by addiction in the Newry and Armagh areas will receive more support.

Davina’s Ark has been awarded a £99,410 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund. The group supports people affected by addiction and their families in Newry and the surrounding areas. They also work to reduce the stigma associated with addiction.

They are using the funding over two years to run addiction recovery programmes. This includes both men and women only support groups, and education programmes to increase awareness and educate people to better understand addiction. They are also running a family education and support programme to help families of people with addiction, and weekly sessions for people who are new to recovery and those who have been in recovery for a longer time. These sessions include support groups and one-to-one counselling sessions.

Rosemary Rooney, Davina’s Ark CEO/Chairperson, said: "We are delighted with our funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which is allowing us to help more people with this unique and vital programme.

“We are offering support to break the cycle of addiction and associated psychological trauma for the person in addiction and their families, rediscover relationships in families ‘lost’ to addiction, change the way people view addiction, reduce the shame and stigma associated with this, and bring hope and recovery to those affected.

“Our recovery programme of counselling support and education groups offers change and a way forward, creating choice and a healthier lifestyle. We would like to thank National Lottery players for making this possible.”

Kate Beggs, The National Lottery Community Fund Northern Ireland Director, said: “I am delighted to announce this grant today. It’s great to see National Lottery money being used by people who are taking the lead in developing great ideas to help their communities thrive.

“This year we’re celebrating the 25th birthday of the National Lottery, and I want to thank all the National Lottery players who have helped make work like this possible.”
