It really was a case of "May the Fourth be with you" at Newry Sports Centre just before 1am this morning when Independent local election candidate for Newry, Gavin Malone topped the poll and them some, polling over a fifth of the vote receiving a massive 2296 first preference votes. It was a long days counting before the Newry count could get underway just before 11pm but it was worth the wait for the newcomer.

Duly elected on the first count Mr Malones incredible number of surplus votes will no doubt help more than one candidate over the line when counting resumes later this morning to fill the remaining 5 seats.
