The long trip to the indoor athletics arena at Athlone last weekend was well worth it for Newry Athletic Club's Joanne McCauley who returned with a bronze in the long jump at the Irish Life Health Masters Indoor Championships.

Competing in the F40 category, she came back with an Irish veteran bronze medal in the long jump, leaping close to her best. The Kookie O'Hagan coached athlete becomes the first Newry AC athlete to medal in the field events at an Irish championship.

The mountain running season also got underway for Newry AC on Saturday, the venue being a wet and slippery Glenariff. Newry's Esther Dickson, last year's Hill and Dale champion, ran superbly to easily win the ladies race.
