NICS 1’s 4-3 Newry 1’s

Newry travelled to Stormont on Saturday in their first game of the new year to face Civil Service.  Newry started well and were one up within 3 minutes when Kris Fletcher broke forward with the ball committing the keeper before slipping the ball to Alex Irwin who slapped it home into the empty net.  Five minutes later and it was two, this time Robert Irwin broke forward from midfield before beating two men on the edge of the circle and firing a fierce low shot past the keeper.  Civil Service pushed forward forcing a number of short corners and their pressure paid off as they pulled one back after picking up a rebound from a short corner.  Newry regained their two goal advantage when David England found himself in the Service circle and was able to dig out a reverse stick shot which slipped through the keepers pads.

After the break Service really pushed forward and got another goal back with a back post tap in five minutes into the second half. Newry were struggling to put together any sustained possession and were being forced back.  Service got back on level terms with 15 minutes remaining when they took a quick free catching the Newry defence out of position and making them pay.  Newry started to get forward after the equaliser and were unlucky not to take the lead again when Kris Fletcher seen his effort rebound off the post and another shot from David Andrews flash narrowly wide.  Service however still had more in the tank and forced another short corner reacting quickest to the rebound to get their forth a seal the win.

Newry Olympic Ladies 1st XI 1 – CI Ladies 0

The Newry Ladies where off to a great start with a 1-0 win when they played their first match of 2018 against CI on Saturday 6th January.

Newry started well and were controlling much of the opening play forcing a number of short corners.  As the half wore on CI grew into the game and soon won a penalty corner on the break but Newrys defence quickly cleared the ball preventing them from scoring. There was some great play by both teams, each having numerous opportunities in the circle. However Newry was soon to change the score line when right winger Aimee Magowan drove the ball into the circle and won a penalty corner as the ball bounced of one of CIs players feet. The ball was injected out by captain Kathryn Baird to Suzanne Rollins at the top of the circle who took a shot on goal but was deflected off the keeper to Baird at left post who popped the ball in the net. The score line remained 1-0 to Newry at halftime.

During the second half Newry continued to keep the pressure on CI with some great play by forwards Shannen Robinson and Rollins. Newry won a number of penalty corners during the second half but with great defending by the CI keeper and defence Newry were unable to add to the score line.

Newry fought hard to prevent CI from equalizing and at the final whistle the score was 1-0 to Newry.
