The Policing and Community Safety Partnership and the PSNI are embarking on a new engagement initiative for policing in the city where you can catch up with members of the police for a chat or to voice your concerns.

PCSP Chair Cllr Mickey Larkin, stated, “This is a welcome community engagement initiative supported by the PCSP, the PSNI often fight not just crime, but community distrust and disapproval and this project, a continuation of the PSNI clinic we ran earlier this year, will support the community in getting to know and get help from their local officers especially at this time of change within both Council and PSNI”

Newry City Neighbourhood Inspector Jacquie Gillespie added: “The local neighbourhood police teams have been working hard to build relations and improve engagement and have done so successfully over the past number of years in partnership with community groups and other statutory bodies. However recent structural changes including the introduction of local policing teams and budget restrictions have prompted a review of how best to continue and build upon existing relationships and this is just one example of how we aim to achieve that”

Barry Johnston, Grounded Espresso Bar “We are delighted to serve as the launch pad for this new programme, its fits well with the Grounded ethos to facilitate our customers to engage in real conversations with local police, getting to know each other over coffee, helping to build trust and confidence along the way.”

The Coffee with Cop initiative started last week in Grounded and will operate on a fortnightly basis as follows:

The Boulevard, Margaret Square, October 20th ;   11am-12pm

My Aunt Jane’s, Hill Street, November 5th 11am-12pm

Canal Court, Merchants Quay, November 16th 11am – 12pm

(More dates and venues to be added over coming weeks)
