Local councillors Roisin Mulgrew and Oonagh Magennis have asked the local community to be vigilant after a spate of reported robberies in Camlough, Bessbrook, Lissummon and Crossmaglen.

 Slieve Gullion area Councillor Oonagh Magennis has said the robberies are a matter of huge concern after reports of incidents last night, Thursday 10 October.

“I have been informed that Homes in the Camlough and Lissumon areas were robbed this evening (Thursday). This news and given the fact that recently  there have been robberies in the Bessbrook locality, is a grave cause of concern.  

"An Audi A4 Estate car with 4 males on board is suspected of involvement in this evenings robberies. I would once again urge all to be vigilant and to be alert to suspicious activity”.

Fellow Slieve Gullion councillor Roisin Mulgrew has met with the PSNI to discuss the issue and said "I can confirm that the indications point to the same people being responsible for these break ins as well as a number in the Crossmaglen area.

"I cannot overstate the need for everyone to be vigilant and to use some common sense, especially as we move towards the darker nights of winter and of course Christmas.

"Those responsible are opportunists who see a home which appears to be empty at the time and are primarily looking for cash, jewelry and safes.

"Even simple measures such as having a few lamps on a timer, closing curtains and interior doors can act as a deterrent.

"I'd also call on people not only to look out for their own home but to keep any eye out for suspicious behaviour around the homes of your neighbours, especially those who may be elderly or vulnerable.

"Criminals can't prosper in strong, united communities."
