The 34 year old cyclist who died as a result of a collision around 8.30pm last night on the A1 Dual carriageway outside Newry has been named.

Thirty four year old John Paul McKevitt was from the Newry area. The incident happened close to the off slip for Sheepbridge and the cyclist was taken to hospital but died of his injuries a short time later.. A cyclist and lorry were involved.

A 35 year old man arrested last night in connection with the collision remains in custody this afternoon.

Newry & Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady said "The news of the tragic death of a cyclist on the A1 Carrigeway has caused great sadness and shock. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim as they try to come to terms with this dreadful news" 

The PSNI are appealing to anyone who was on the A1 around 8:30pm in this area, anyone who witnessed the collision, anyone who stopped and helped or anyone with any other information to contact them at Ardmore on 101 quoting ref 1239 25/09/14.


The 35 year old man, arrested in connection with above has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
