Today is 'What Matters to You’ day and the Paediatric Team at Daisy Hill Hospital are encouraging patients, clients, carers and staff to share what matters to them.

The ‘What matters to you?’ day started in Norway in 2014 with the aim of encouraging and supporting more meaningful conversations between those who provide health and social care and the people, families and carers who receive services. It is celebrated in Scotland and the Southern Trust is one of the first in Northern Ireland to join the campaign.

At Daisy Hill Hospital, the Paediatric team organised a coffee morning and informal discussion for staff to share their views.

Associate Medical Director for Children and Young People’s Services, Dr Ahmed Khan and the Paediatric team have recently introduced the S.A.F.E.(Safety Awareness for Everyone) initiative aimed at improving safety and quality of services. It includes a regular Senior Safety Walk of the Paediatric Ward and the introduction of a Paediatric Newsletter with new mascot ‘Polly the Penguin’ to help promote key safety messages and other ways of improving communication among staff  for improved quality of care and  experience of children and families using their service.

Launching the campaign, Aldrina Magwood, Director of Performance and Reform for the Southern Trust says: “We offer a wide range of services to thousands of people every day from within our hospitals and right across the community. We strive to deliver safe, high quality care with compassion and despite the rising demand for our services and the ongoing challenges we face, want to ensure we are continually improving the services we provide by asking what matters, listening to what matters and where possible,  deliver what matters within the resources available to us.”

Vivienne Toal, Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development adds “Those who receive our services are best placed to tell us what they feel works well and where they think we may be able to improve their experience. It is also particularly important to hear from staff who are at the frontline delivering services, to highlight how they think we can improve safety and quality. We   encourage anyone with an experience of local health and social care to use this opportunity to share their views and suggestions no matter how big or small.”
