Tomorrow, Saturday 11 May many local shopping centres and supermarkets are giving the public a chance to have their say on a consultation about the provision of Stroke Services locally.

It's part of a strategy and action plan by the Support Our Stroke Services Committee appointed at a recent Public Meeting, to combat the proposed closure of the Stroke Unit at Daisy Hill Hospital.

If the Daisy Hill Hospital Stoke Unit is closed anyone suffering a stroke in the Newry Mourne and Down District Council area will have to travel to Craigavon Area Hospital to receive their treatment. This proposal will have a detrimental impact on any one from our district who suffers a stroke as they will fail to avail of immediate treatment within the recommended ‘Golden Hour’.

The Committee firmly believe the Consultation document prepared by the Dept of Health is flawed and failed to consider all options available and did not investigate a possible North/South option similar to the very successful Renal Service which is managed by Daisy Hill Hospital and provides renal services for patients in both North and South of Ireland.

To facilitate the residents of our district the Committee have secured the support of a large number of Shopping Centres and Supermarkets, who have agreed to their facilities being used tomorrow Saturday 11th May 2019 from 9.00 to 5.00 to allow people to sign a draft consultation reply to the flawed Review of Stroke Services Consultation Document.

Participating Supermarkets on Saturday 11/05/2019

1. Buttercrane Shopping Centre, Newry.
2. The Quay’s Shopping Centre.
3. SuperValu Shopping Centre , Hill St, Newry.
4. SuperValu, Dublin Road Newry.
5. Hughes Shopping Centre Camlough.
6. Euro Spar, Warrenpoint.
7. Vivo Extra, Upper Dromore Rd, Warrenpoint.
8. Mace, Church Street, Warrenpoint.

Other Supermarkets and Shopping Centres throughout the district have also offered their support and details of these additional consultation days will be publicly advertised in the near future to include, Crossmaglen, Kilkeel, Rathfriland, Newcastle, Cloughogue, Mayobridge etc.

Support our Stroke Services Committee are asking the public to avail of this opportunity to have a say in the Review of Stroke Services in N. Ireland and the possible transfer of strokes services from Daisyhill Hospital to Craigavon Area Hospital. All you have to do is sign a proposed draft reply to the consultation document which will be available on the day.

The Committee had also written to the Dept of Health asking for an extension of the consultation and this has been extended until 19th July 2019.

The Committee are also writing to all Schools, Colleges of Further Education, Youth Clubs, Community Associations, Gaelic Clubs, Carnbane League, Farmers Groups etc to request their support in replying to this flawed Stroke Services Consultation Document.

Progress on the Committees strategy will be communicated to the public regularly and anyone wishing to assist can contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

A Committee Spokesperson added "We would really appreciate the full support of the public at this time and we  require a community effort to ensure our stroke  services unit remains at Daisyhill  Hospital, Newry."
