Cúpla Focal

Units 1-14, when learned, allow you to participate in a Cúpla Focal assessment if you wish.  This can be arranged by contacting This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  The Newry Gaeláras is a Centre of Excellence in Irish Language Education (Ionad Barr Feabhais um Ghaeloideachais) and any informal accreditation attained there is a recognised standard of achievement.

The next Units help prepare you for a Silver Fáinne or Fáinne Airgid award.  Those who earn the Silver Fáinne normally wear it with great pride.

This Unit embarks on questions on the Silver Fáinne list (drawn from the Ár dTeanga –Do Rogha booklet, available from Gaeláras Mhic Ardghail, 6b Chapel Street Upper, Newry BT34 2DS). These questions that are not covered in Units 1-14 but the introductory Units 1-14 themselves form constituent parts of the Silver Fáinne test.  This is to facilitate continuity and progression in the learning process.

The first new question, but on a familiar topic, is Cé thú féin – who are you?

Cé thú féin?

Cé thú féin?

It is sufficient to simply answer with

Is mise Conall

Cé thú féin?

Is mise Conall

The next question asks where you were born and raised:

Cá háit ar rugadh agus tógadh thú?

Cá háit ar rugadh agus tógadh thú?

Where were you born and raised?

Cá háit ar rugadh agus tógadh thú?

A straightforward answer would be

Rugadh agus tógadh in Iúr Chinn Trá mé

Cá háit ar rugadh agus tógadh thú?

Rugadh agus tógadh in Iúr Chinn Trá mé

Listen to the following answers

Rugadh agus tógadh i gCaisleán Ruairí mé

Caisleán Ruairí or Ros Treabhair is Rostrevor

Listen for and replicate the g sound before Caisleán Ruairí

Rugadh agus tógadh i gCaisleán Ruairí mé

Rugadh agus tógadh i gCaisleán Ruairí mé

Rugadh agus tógadh i gCaisleán Ruairí mé

Rugadh agus tógadh i mBéal Feirste mé

Béal Feirste is Belfast

Listen for and replicate the m sound before Béal Feirste

Rugadh agus tógadh i mBéal Feirste mé

You could also reply by saying

Rugadh in Ard Mhacha mé ach tógadh i gCamloch mé

I was born in Armagh but raised in Camlough

Rugadh in Ard Mhacha mé ach tógadh i gCamloch mé

Rugadh in Ard Mhacha mé ach tógadh i gCamloch mé

Listen to the following short conversation

Haigh. Cé thú féin?

Is mise Méabh. Agus cé thusa?

Is mise Gráinne

Cá háit ar rugadh agus tógadh thú a Ghráinne
Rugadh agus tógadh mé anseo – in Iúr Chinn Trá

Agus cad fútsa> (what about you?) Cad fútsa?

Rugadh agus tógadh i gCill Chaoil mé

Cill Chaoil is obviously Kilkeel, the narrow church, Cill Chaoil

And another brief exchange

Cé thusa?

I am Alasdair. I was born and raised in Scotland

Is mise Alasdair. Rugadh agus tógadh in Albain mé

Agus is mise Séamus agus uaimse, go dtí an chéad Aonad eile, slán go fóill.
