Firefighters are currently working to bring a large fire under control on land at the Albert Basin.

Smoke could be seen coming from the area at around 5.30 this afternoon while people jogged and walked by on the Carlingford Lough Greenway.

The fire took hold of a large shed which Newry, Mourne and Down Council use as a storage facility and a large plume of smoke could be seen coming through the roof of the building.

At least three fire tenders were in attendance with around a dozen firefighters with water was sourced from the nearby Newry Canal. Police are also in attendance.

The Albert Basin site is the location for the new Public Park. in Newry.

The cause of the fire is not known.
