Speaking on the plans the MLA said, “This week, the British Government has completely disgraced itself by moving to shut down access to truth and justice for the victims and survivors of our conflict.

“To provide a blanket amnesty to state and paramilitary killers is absolutely abhorrent. The SDLP will never yield in our advocacy for innocent victims and survivors, and we stand resolutely behind them now, more than ever.

“The proposals brought forward by the British Government this week are an affront to decency and democracy, and they constitute a total dereliction of duty, which is why the SDLP have urgently recalled the Assembly.

“These proposals are opposed by every party in the NI Executive and they must be withdrawn immediately. There can be no ambiguity here - those who committed monstrous crimes, destroying the lives of thousands, should be met with a jail cell, not an amnesty.
