A lockdown Colouring Competition has seen Mulkerns EUROSPAR Newry and Mulkerns SPAR Jonesborough raise £2000 for Women's Aid and Barnardos

The stores ran the competition called ‘Happy Homes’ to raise money for children in our community, who were most at risk from the negative effects of lockdown.

Local children were invited to help create ‘Happy Homes’ by submitting their colouring creations online to Mulkerns, who donated £1 to Barnardos NI and Armagh Down Women’s Aid for every entry submitted. The colourful creations were displayed on Mulkerns Community events notice board which when all community events were cancelled, had suddenly become bare overnight. The new colourful display gave queueing customers something bright to focus on as they waited patiently in line, and helped to create awareness of the needs of these local charities.

Terry Mulkerns commented “We became aware from the outset of lockdown that many families found themselves trapped in very unstable and even dangerous circumstances in their own homes. We wanted to do something to help these families, while also generating awareness among those more fortunate. We contacted our local Women’s Aid and Barnardo’s and they were very grateful to be the beneficiaries of this initiative, reiterating the problems that current circumstances are causing them. We were delighted to be able to help in our own small way by raising awareness and giving this cash donation.”
