The worldwide movement brought together over 150 countries for a day of clean-ups across the globe with one goal of ridding our beaches, rivers and streets of litter. The Newry based clean up this year brought together over 20 volunteers, including local businesses and community groups who worked on numerous areas across the city centre. The groups lifted 45 bags of litter and weeds within the 2 hour clean up. Newry BID manager Eamonn Connolly commented, “We are delighted to be able to facilitate this clean up across Newry and with our turn out. We know that litter is a key issue for our members, and we want to ensure that we create an environment that people what to visit, shop, work and enjoy.  We hope that this small action goes further to raise awareness and create lasting changes of our City Centre.”

The issue of graffiti was also tackled by Newry BID and their partners to mark World Clean Up Day. Newry BID facilitated a team to remove the graffiti from a number of areas with Newry. High pressured water was used to remove the unsightly graffiti that has popped up across the city, Eamonn continued, “One of Newry BID’s aims within our 5-year term is Improving how Newry looks, graffiti is an issue that plagues all cities, we work closely to monitor any around the city and work quickly to remove it to ensure our city centre offers a welcoming impression to all.”
