Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick attended the official launch of the newly refurbished play areas in Martins Lane and Whitegates in the Meadow, Newry on Wednesday 29 March 2017.

The much needed upgrades to both play areas were funded by the Department for Communities Neighbourhood Renewal Investment programme and delivered by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Speaking at the launch, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “On behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council I would like to thank the Department for Communities (DfC) for their continued financial and administrative support as well as all the people that helped to make the programme a success particularly the officers of the Active and Healthy communities department within Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.”

The upgrades to the play area in Martins Lane include removal of a climbing frame, installation of a new spiral wheelchair friendly roundabout, repairs to surfacing and the widening of entrance gates to ensure the facility is fully accessible to everyone.

In Whitegates, the new play area upgrade included new fencing, ball stop and new football posts with new line markings.

This investment of £29,147 from the Department for Communities has provided this much needed upgrade to allow children and young people from both communities to enjoy the facilities, improving overall health and well being in the local area.
