Over 130 Santa's raised ten thousand pounds for local charities during their run in Hill Street, Newry on Friday night.

Benefiting were local charities, Autism Mums, Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and Headway Newry.

The Santa Fun Run was organised in conjunction with the ‘turning on’ of the Christmas Lights in Newry, on Friday and was hosted by Newry and Mourne District Council. 

Speaking on behalf of the event organisers, President Deborah Loughran, Newry Chamber of Commerce & Trade said, ‘We are absolutely delighted with the support received from the local business community and local citizens for this annual charity event.  We would also like to give credit to the three charities and the efforts they put into making this event a great fundraising success’.  

President Loughran continued, ‘On behalf of Newry Chamber, I would like to commend Newry & Mourne District Council, Newry City Centre Management and the PSNI for their assistance in organising this charity event and the Christmas Light’s Switch on’.

Cheque presentations will be made to the charities at the Annual Christmas Charity Dinner which will take place on Thursday, 4 October in the Canal Court Hotel.

One of the participants was MLA Megan Fearon who said "Businesses and individuals from throughout the area came together in the true Christmas spirit of caring tonight" said the Newry & Armagh MLA who continued "Three deserving charities, The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, Autism Mums and Headway Newry will all benifit  from the monies raised".

Megan was joined by her Sinn Féin Councillor colleagues Cllrs Valerie Harte, Liz Kimmins and Charlie Casey on her dash through the streets of Newry.
