Newry Rainbow Community will tomorrow open a Book of Condolence in memory of all those who lost their lives in Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida over the weekend. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council also are opening a Book where you can express your sympathy. The horrific hate crime has shaken the LGB&T community all over the world and closer to home in Newry.

In a statement released today the NRC said "The Newry Rainbow Community is saddened by the horrific slaughter, and maiming, of so many innocent people in the Pulse gay niteclub in Orlando, Florida last Sunday morning.

"The NRC would like to send condolences to the victims’ families involved in this attack, fuelled by the hate and homophobia which blights the lives of countless people across the World.

"It is truly heartbreaking when lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are targeted for death for that fact alone.

"The LGB&T community with our many allies here and across the World will keep fighting for the right to live freely, openly and without fear. We must honour the victims of this crime by continuing our fight for full equality, embracing diversity and inclusion in the face of adversity and prejudice.

"Attacks on anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation are an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as human beings."

To allow people an opportunity to record condolences and as an act of solidarity with the LGB&T community in Orlando the NRC is inviting everyone to sign their Book of Condolence.

Signing the book Gillian Fitzpatrick, Chairperson, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council said, "The opening of these Books of Condolence will allow the good people of our district to send their solidarity and condolences to the people of Orlando. I offer my sympathies to the families and friends of all those who have lost their lives.”

Mr Damien McShane, Chairperson of Newry Rainbow accompanied the Chairperson and he expressed his heartfelt sympathies to the Florida community.

As well as at the NRC in Monaghan Street books of Condolence are located at the Council’s Newry Office, Monaghan Row and Downpatrick Office, Downshire Civic Centre, Ardglass Road.  Books of Condolence will also be available at the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry and the Down Arts Centre, Downpatrick.  The books will be available for signing during normal opening hours.

The NRC Book of Condolence can be signed from tomorrow Tuesday 14th, at Rainbow House, 28a Monaghan Street Newry at the following times through this week;

 Tuesday              10:00am – 4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm

Wednesday        2:00pm – 4:00pm

Thursday             7:00pm – 10:00pm

Friday                  12.00 – 3:00pm and 7:00pm -10:00pm

Saturday             2:00pm – 5:00pm
