Publication of concept design proposals for the Albert Basin Park have been welcomed by Councillor Barra Ó Muirí,  Sinn Féin group leader on Newry Mourne and Down Council.

Project stakeholders as well as Councillors were shown slides of the proposals in an online presentation last week but the proposed  8 year timeline of the project was the cause of much annoyance, especially as Councillors had agreed that significant progress was to be made by the end of this Council term, May 2023. The proposed timeline didn't envisage any work happening on the site till well after this date.

Reflecting on some of the issues raised at the online meeting the Councillor said his party believed the timescale could be shortened but stopped short of saying that they would endeavour to make this happen “The consultation report gives detail to the complexities of the project, none of which are insurmountable. It is estimated that the project will cost around £30 million and will take around 8 years to complete. It is our view that the  timescale outlined, 8 years ,can be shortened." said Cllr Ó Muirí.

The Slieve Gullion Councillor added "The sourcing  of external funding is key and my colleague Liz Kimmins MLA has been proactive in identifying  streams of funding which would move the development of the Park on a lot quicker. Councillors and Council Officers need to ensure that the Planning process moves smoothly with no obstacles or hold ups."

Councillor Ó Muiri concluded “My Party is unequivocal in our support for this Park. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to help deliver it”.
