Candidates standing in Crotlieve are sitting councillors Michael Carr, Gillian Fitzpatrick, Declan McAteer and Connaire McGreevy. In Newry the candidates are Jacinta Duffy, Kevin McAteer, Peter McEvoy and Gary Stokes.

The Local Government Election will take place on Thursday, May 22nd and see 41 councillors elected to the new Newry, Mourne & Down District Council that will replace the existing two councils. This will mean a much larger council with additional responsibilities and challenges.

Speaking at the registration both MLA’s and the MP said: “We wish to commend to you the entire team of SDLP candidates who are running for the Newry, Mourne and Down Council. The SDLP has chosen candidates who represent a fine cross-section of youth and experience. What unites them all under the SDLP banner is a genuine desire to serve the public. We hope that you will extend to them the support you have always given to us.”
