U21s

Our U21s put in a battling performance at home to Tir na nOg on Sunday afternoon to record a fully deserved two-point win, 3 – 9 to 2 – 10.

An early Matthew Girvan point got the Shane’s of to good start but two points, one from a free, put the Portadown side ahead only for Eamon McCabe to power forward and find the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Two pointed frees from Tir na nOg tied the game before a long ball forward beat the full-back and Matthew Girvan seized on it to rifle home his side’s second goal of the contest. A fine long-range point from Padraig Magee gave the Shane’s a four-point lead but a late first-half point from Tir na nOg saw them trail by three at the break.

An early second-half point from the impressive Ronan Byrne restored the Shane’s four-point advantage and minutes later the home side raised their third green flag when Matthew Girvan got his toe to the ball for his second and his side’s third goal of the game. The Shane’s were well on top at this stage and increased their lead to eight when Eamon McCabe slotted the ball over the bar following some great approach play. Two Tir na nOg points reduced the deficit to six and minutes later it was down to just three as they notched up their first goal of the game before the sides swapped a point apiece with Declan Harris on target for the Shane’s. Cormac Feely popped the ball over from a tight angle to put the Shane’s four to the good but a quick-fire goal and point had Tir na nOg back on level terms and they really had their tails up at this stage. However, the Shane’s dug deep and points from Ronan Byrne and Jack Beattie put them back in front with less than five minutes left on the clock and in a tense both sides scored another point each, with Michael McParland getting the insurance score for the Shane’s deep into injury time.
