It's hoped that recent vandalism to a carriage from the Bessbrook and Newry Tramway during it's storage in a fenced off area of Albert Basin will be repaired quickly and that the carriage will be moved to it's new proposed home at Newry Railway Station. Damage was done to windows and doors of the tram and grafitti daubed in May.

Originally the tram was to be sited on the Camlough Roundabout at the Egyptian Arch but due to a potential for vandalism there it was decided to have it on view at Newry Train Station.

Councillor Roisin Mulgrew condemned the vandalism and spoke of her hopes the project will be completed.

“As everyone will be aware the initial location of the tram, at the Camlough Road roundabout and the gateway to Slieve Gullion, had to be changed due also to vandalism.

The Council was made aware of Translinks willingness and indeed eagerness to house the tram at the train station. This was followed by a number of conversations with all parties involved and the recommendation to relocate the tram was approved at an ERT meeting and unanimously ratified by full council”.

Cllr Mulgrew said that all legalities by Translink have been completed and are due to be forwarded to council and said It is hoped that the tram will be placed in its new location in the coming weeks.

The councillor also added that damage to the structure of the tram has been minimal and will be corrected and confirmed that it is the councils intention to provide enhanced security on the site while it remains at the Albert Basin.
