Senior Men

A great performance from our senior men on Friday night saw them defeat St Paul’s in their first championship group game, 0-16 to 0-10.

Playing with the wind at their backs St Paul’s opened the scoring in the second minute before their goalkeeper made a great save minutes later to deny David McCabe a certain goal. A ’45 from Connaire Mackin brought the Shane’s level with David McCabe and Ciaran Mackin knocking over apiece to give the home side a two-point advantage. Two St Paul’s frees tied the game before another two points edged them in front again with fifteen minutes on the clock. The sides then swapped two points each with Connaire Mackin slotting over two placed balls before the same man was on target soon after to get his side back to within one. With half-time whistle fast approaching the Shane’s efforts to get back on level terms were rewarded when a great move ended with Neil Paul Lennon putting the ball over the bar and see the teams go in all-square at the break, 0 – 7 to 0 – 7.

The Shane’s were on the front foot right from the off in the second period and two points in the opening minutes from David McCabe and Neil Paul Lennon gave them a great start. A St Paul’s free in third minute proved to be their only score for almost thirty minutes as the Shane’s took total control of the contest. In that period the Shane’s were the totally dominant and played some of their best football of the season, scoring six points without reply, the scores coming from David McCabe (0-2), Kristian Magill, Neil Paul Lennon, Marc Feehan and Ryan Quinn. It was during this spell that the Camlough side effectively won the game, keeping their opponents scoreless whilst kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end to give them a commending seven-point advantage. Two pointed frees reduced the deficit to five but a late long-range Connaire Mackin free sealed the Shane’s win on a score-line of 0 -16 to 0 – 10.

Next up for the lads is their second championship group game away to Wolfe Tones next Saturday afternoon at 4.30pm.
