Write a commentThe success of Sheepbridge Park and Ride facility for motorists car or public transport sharing on the way to work in Dublin or Belfast or other location has resulted in a £220,000 investment by the Department for Infrastructure that will bring 106 additional park and share spaces to the existing 63 spaces at Sheepbridge, Newry. The site has been full to capacity virtually from the day it opened, with many motorists parking on the roadside nearby.
This additional provision will safely cater for those road users who are unable to utilise the existing oversubscribed facilities and also allow for bus pick up and drop off.
The public is encouraged to use these new facilities to park their vehicles and travel onwards in a shared vehicle to their place of work or study. This reduces congestion, improves journey times and is better for the environment.
Work has commenced on site and is expected to last for around 8 weeks.
MP Chris Hazzard and local MLA Sinead Ennis have both welcomed the additional spaces.
Chris Hazzard MP said “This is great news for commuters from the wider South Down and Newry area who are increasingly keen to make use of the park & share service currently on offer at the Sheepbridge.
“These additional spaces will also now ensure the site is safe for commuters as buses will now be able to safely access the site to pick up and drop off.
Local MLA Sinead Ennis added “I also would like to commend DFI officials for continuing to invest significant resources in improving park & share facilities like this throughout South Down.
“With more sites potentially earmarked for busy commuter spots such as Ballynahinch and Downpatrick it is vital that resources continue to be allocated in the years ahead to meet this growing need.”
