ABC Council Councillor Bróna Haughey has said that recent funding secured for Carrigatuke will help further preserve and develop the popular landmark. The ‘Friends of Sliabh Fuait’ group has just been awarded £12,480 towards enhancing its tourist and historical potential by raising awareness of the history, beauty and natural resources of the area.
Slieve Fuait and the Carrickatuke viewpoint are in the historical Fews Forest near Newtownhamilton and funders included Foras na Gaeilge, CDHN and ABC Council.
The funding is to be used to develop a bilingual guided tour of the area as well as community workshops.
Speaking on the project Cllr Haughey said “I’m delighted to announce that ‘Friends of Sliabh Fuait’ have been successful in securing £12,480. The bulk of this funding will provide an exciting new bilingual self-driving guided tour of the area with signposting and audio posts highlighting historical points of interest. The other funding will facilitate community workshops to produce art crafts reflecting the historical and scenic beauty of Carrigatuke.
The Cusher Sinn Féin Councillor continued “This is fantastic news for the local community and for Irish language enthusiasts. I’d like to congratulate ‘friends of Sliabh Fuait’ who have worked hard to preserve and showcase Carrigatuke. I’d also like to thank the funders, Foras na Gaeilge, CDHN and ABC Council.
