Write a commentFifteen cars have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack at a car sales premises on the Forkhill Road area this morning, Tuesday 31st December.
Police have said that shortly before 2:15am, it was reported that around 15 cars parked in the area were on fire. Two men wearing balaclavas were seen leaving the area and made off in a black Toyota Avensis.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the fire. Damage was caused to the vehicles involved and the incident is being treated as deliberate ignition.
Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and police would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 125 31/12/19. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Newry Mourne & Down Councillor Liz Kimmins has has strongly condemned the incident. “This disgraceful act of premeditated criminality has shocked the local community. Anyone with any information about this incident should contact the Police as a matter of urgency”.
